Saturday Night Live 12/5/09 - Blake Lively & Rihanna

Updated: Added all the online videos and the overall thoughts. Originslly posted 12/6/09.
=======================

Overall: Not much Andy this week either. At least he was in the actual show, though, but one of the sketches isn't online. =^)

That's 4 appearances total for Andy, but one was a commercial and one the digital short. I'm glad we got two musical digital shorts in a row, but neither one was as good as "On the Ground," which makes "On the Ground" the biggest hit digital short of the season (so far). Let's get some more! Two more episodes before Christmas!

Season 35 : Ep. 8

Blake Lively hosts Saturday Night Live with musical guest Rihanna.

Cold Opening - White House Crashers

Uninvited White House guests get their photos.

Fred Armisen ... Barack Obama
Will Forte ... Secret Service agent
Bill Hader ... Secret Service agent
Bobby Moynihan ... Tareq Salahi
Nasim Pedrad ... Secret Service agent
Jason Sudeikis ... Joseph Biden
Kristen Wiig ... Michaele Salahi

This is Bobby's first time he said, "Live from New York..."

Monologue

Blake Lively
Fred Armisen ... Zoot
Bill Hader ... Animal
Bobby Moynihan ... Gonzo
Andy Samberg ... Swedish Chef
Jenny Slate ... Janice

Show - Vagisil Superstars of Bowling Tournament 1989

This tournament has a fantastic sponsor.

Blake Lively ... Michelle Rayburn-Gene
Will Forte ... Greg Stink
Jason Sudeikis ... Pete Twinkle
Kristen Wiig ... Donna Saint Louis

Billiards and now bowling? These aren't all that entertaining.

Show - The Situation Room

Tiger comes clean with the painful truth.

Blake Lively ... Elin Nordegren
Jason Sudeikis ... Wolf Blitzer
Kenan Thompson ... Tiger Woods

Film - SNL Digital Short: Shy Ronnie

Rihanna
Andy Samberg ... Shy Ronnie

Hahahaha. Andy Samberg teams up with Rihanna. I don't think it's in the same category as "On the Ground," but it's definitely funny!

Commercial - gossip girl: staten island

Totally spotted on the Staten Island Ferry.

Blake Lively ... Chandelier Martini
Fred Armisen ... Sal
Bill Hader ... Lenny Leoni
Bobby Moynihan ... Big Nick
Nasim Pedrad ... friend
Jason Sudeikis ... announcer (voice)
Kristen Wiig ... Chandelier's mom

Commercial - kickspit Underground Rock Festival

A one-of-a-kind throwdown.

Nasim Pedrad ... Lil Blaster
Jason Sudeikis ... DJ Super Soak

Amusing, but not funny. Nasim is showing range. This is the type of bit that Amy Poehler or Cheri Oteri would have done.

Musical Performance "Russian Roulette"

Rihanna

Weekend Update

Seth Meyers
Kenan Thompson ... Bill Cosby
Abby Elliott ... Brittany Murphy

Bill Cosby

There are young people sayin' flim-flam.

Kenan's Cosby is hilarious! It's what got him the Fat Albert movie years ago.

Brittany Murphy

Brittany is not the host.

Hilarious! Weekend Update is stiill the funniest part of SNL. This is why they keep Abby on. She keeps pumping out these hilarious impressions! More! We want more Abby Elliott!

Sketch - Skirt Shopping

There is mama drama at the mall.

Blake Lively ... daughter
Abby Elliott ... customer
Will Forte ... employee
Kenan Thompson ... Virginiaca Hastings

Virginica has a lot of daughters. =^)

Commercial - UPS

Bill Hader ... Andy Azula

A dude in a women's wig is UPS' gift to the world.

Show - Late Night With Chris Hansen

Blake Lively ... Cher
Fred Armisen ... Tony Blaze
Bill Hader ... Chris Hansen
Seth Meyers ... announcer (voice)
Bobby Moynihan ... guard
Andy Samberg ... Keanu Reeves
Jason Sudeikis ... Philip Seymour Hoffman
Kenan Thompson ... guard

Commercial UPS

The UPS guy has a date.

Bill Hader ... Andy Azula

Musical Performance "Hard"

Rihanna
Young Jeezy

Sketch - Potato Chip Thief

There may be a chip missing.

Blake Lively ... Janelley
Will Forte ... Mr. Greenblatt
Jason Sudeikis ... Mr. Aymong

Will and Jason think of the craziest skits and characters together. Well, everything Will does is crazy. This one is particularly memorable (and more entertaining than most). It deserves some sort of sequel, especially of Jason's character.

Bottom line: I loved Kenan and Abby on WU. Other than that, it seemed like there were a bunch of situations, but not many jokes.

The Monologue was amusing and enjoyable, but not funny. I was glad to see Andy's Swedish Chef back though.

I didn't like the Cold Opening. It just seems like they can't make Obama funny, so they put him in situations around crazy people to make that funny. They need to find a new Obama.

So I think Bill Cosby, Brittany Murphy, the digital short, and Andy's Keanu Reeves (no video of that one) were lights in a dark episode.

You'll also notice that SNL hasn't been concentrating on original characters (they're most just concentrating on impressions, trying things out, and Kristen Wiig characters).

Back when Mike Meyers or Will Ferrell were on, you got two or three hilarious skits featuring your favorite repeat characters. Now it's pretty much just Kristen Wiig brining out her characters or the cast occasionally bringing back "okay" characters that aren't hilarious (just weird).

Enjoy!

  1. so.... who came up with the idea to give blake scarlett johanssons character??? I mean... I just have to say It's a bit hard to do as good as scarletts original character.

other than that, I didn't like this weeks snl :( I loooooved the cold open but after that it just went down hill. blake wasn't natural during her monologue and the bowling sketch was bad already when they did the pool sketch with drew.

I liked andys keanu reeves and the digital short was ok as well. But this week... something that's usually always good... weekend update was very very weak. I hate keenans bill cosby and I didn't really think abbys brittany was that good, sorry. there were also several awkward silences when the audience didn't really respond to seth's jokes.

I don't know.. it's getting weaker every week, maybe they oughta hire some new writers.

  2. Anony,

I loved Kenan and Abby on WU. Other than that, I think you pretty much nailed it. It seemed like there were a bunch of situations, but not many jokes.

Another difference in opinions is that I didn't like the Cold Opening. It just seems like they can't make Obama funny, so they put him in situations around crazy people to make that funny. They need to find a new Obama.

  4. Anony2,

Yes, they played it twice in a row. Sometimes replaying commercials is an easy way to fill the right gap of time, because commercials are often shorter than full skits.

  5. I have to disagree a little. I do love Abby and all of the girls and hope they keep them. Although Abby is really funny, I think she really needs to work on her voices, they are not up to par.

So, what do you think?
