Andy Samberg is among the guest stars appearing in season 2 of "Portlandia," coming to IFC in January, 2012.

Johnny Marr strums his way to "Portlandia": Speaking of guest stars, the reported famous faces expected to turn up in season 2 of "Portlandia" include Kristen Wiig, Amber Tamblyn, Jack McBrayer, Tim Robbins, Andy Samberg and Penny Marshall, in addition to Kyle MacLachlan, reprising his role as a fictional Portland mayor. Now comes word that Johnny Marr, beloved by Smiths fans for his guitar wizardry, will also appear.

You have to catch them when they're out in the wild (AKA publically attending parties or events together).

TLI ditches the Doritos Superbowl commercial

This is what happens when they aren't contractually obligated to enter the contest. There's a decent chance they would have lost the contest and then the money wouldn't go to charity and it would have just been free publicity for Dorritos. Whatever the reason or justification, TLI didn't enter the contest like they said.

"So, I guess TLI didn't want to do a commercial, either out of generosity towards an extra finalist, or out of laziness. Still, I'm kinda bummed either way."

Here are the five consumer-created ads that will battle it out.

"Crash the Super Bowl," Doritos' annual contest which pits consumer-created spots for the brand against each other for the chance to have one air during the big game, is back.

This year, 6,100 entries were submitted, and today, Doritos revealed the five finalist videos that will compete for consumer votes. This is the sixth year that Doritos has run the contest, with winning videos generally providing much of the buzz for the Internet for the weeks following the game.

"Crash the Super Bowl," Doritos' annual contest which pits consumer-created spots for the brand against each other for the chance to have one air during the big game, is back.

This year, just like last, a $1 million cash prize is on the line if a consumer-created video scores the number one spot on the USA Today Ad Meter. The stakes are a little big higher this time around--the maker of the ad that actually makes it to the Super Bowl will get a guaranteed job working on a Doritos brand project with The Lonely Island, the Andy Samberg-helmed comedy group.

An earlier arrangement tapped The Lonely Island to create its own spot, but they will no longer be making one, with that airtime going to another finalist. Two, not one, aspiring filmmakers will see their spots air on advertising's biggest night, with the second spot selected by an internal team at Doritos. Just like previous years, Goodby Silverstein & Partners will handle the Web site and other promotional content for Crash The Super Bowl, including a forthcoming television spot to promote the program. Omnicom's OMD will handle media buying.

NBC had a change of heart/copyrights and posted the Jimmy Fallon SNL Monologue.

Quite a cheer when he came out!

Host Jimmy Fallon grabbed his guitar and made merry in the halls of SNL, offering songs to old friends along the way.

Holy crack in the smack!

Alright, if I didn't do it earlier, I'm going to do it now. I'm predicting that this episode will get Jimmy Fallon a nomination for best guest actor on a comedy series. Last season, Justin Timberlake (won), Zach Galifianakis, and Tina Fey were nominated for that (I was disappointed that Jim Carrey wasn't, because he was so funny).

This year I'm predicting that Jimmy Fallon will be nominated. I'm also predicting that Melissa McCarthy will be nominated this year (for Guest Actress). Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Betty White, Zach Galifianakis, and Justin Timberlake all also have a shot if they host.

Anyway, Andy was hilarious as he came out with Vanessa Bayer to have a Hanukkah verse with Jimmy!

Then watch carefully at 3:36 when Andy and Vanessa run by in the background behind Jimmy! They're getting ready for the end when all the cast comes out and dances!

The crowd went nuts! Jimmy really knows how to give the audience what they want.

Check out the dances of Bill Hader, Andy Samberg, and Taran Killam... those are hilarious! I'd also expect something killer from Kristen Wiig and Jason Sudeikis but they weren't as into it.

First of all, how is Happy Fun Ball (Mike Meyers era) not on this list??? Or what about the Sandler and Farley beer commercial???

Anyway, Taco Town made #8...

Taco Town

It's hard to believe that a restaurant or state fair doesn't already sell something like the taco at Taco Town. To be more exact, it's Taco Town's pizza crepe taco pancake chili bag, but that's a ridiculous name for such a sophisticated meal. Its delicious overindulgence is the kind of thing everyone should try at least once. Though it's probably not wise to make a habit of ordering this taco, every once in a while, you've got to forget the diet and live a little. As it wraps together Italian, Mexican, French, and American cuisine, the taco is representative of the U.S. melting pot. Or the U.S. multi-layer taco, if you're looking for a more precise metaphor.

Doritos enlists The Lonely Island for Super Bowl

The snack chip brand is going to have its sixth annual "Crash the Super Bowl" contest, which allows viewers to submit their own Doritos commercials and fans to vote on their favorites to appear during the big game.

If the ads score well on the USA Today Ad Meter, which measures the popularity of Super Bowl commercials, contestants win cash prizes of up to $1 million.

This year, Doritos has added a twist: It has enlisted Andy Samberg, a comedian on the popular "Saturday Night Live" program, and The Lonely Island, a creative team that consists of Samberg and two childhood friends, to create an ad to compete in the contest.

If their ad wins, they'll donate the prize money to charity. If they don't, they'll work with the winners on a future yet-to-be-determined Doritos project...

This year, they're amping it up by teaming with the partnership The Lonely Island. The team, which also includes Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, wrote, directed and appeared in a series of popular digital shorts for "Saturday Night Live" with Justin Timberlake. The team also wrote and shot a music video for a song called "I'm on a Boat," which was nominated for a Grammy.

(Editor's Note: They also have won an Emmy (Junk in a Box) and have been nominated for an additional 6 (Mother Lover, Shy Ronnie, I Just Had Sex, Jack Sparrow, and Golden Rule).)

Samberg said The Lonely Island agreed to work on the campaign in part because the Super Bowl is "such a large stage," and he added "we just thought it was cool that young filmmakers get an opportunity to get that break."...

Participants [could] enter the contest [in 2011] by submitting a 30-second Doritos ad at www.crashthesuperbowl.com between Oct. 3 and Nov. 21. Five finalists will be announced in January 2012, ahead of NBC's Feb. 5, 2012 Super Bowl XLVI broadcast.

So it says the five finalists will be announced in January, so probably in a few weeks we'll see TLI's commercial and the other four finalists (yes, I'm assuming they'll be in the top 5).

It sounds like they're not getting paid for this commercial, so don't expect a big-budget commercial (not like the Pepsi Superbowl commercial that Andy was in where Justin Timberlake went flying through NY City, passing Andy in his apartment).

Plus TLI's last two commercials weren't so effects-tastic. Their vodka commercial featured a hot woman and them posing in a fountain. Their York commercial involved a York patty with a cartoon face animated on it (not even a cool face like Annoying Orange and Thumb Wars... more like a Photoshop eyes and mouth that was animated).

So there's a good chance TLI won't win this contest. A million is quite a prize.

Daniel's next movie he's promoting is Woman in Black, where he's a young lawyer who travels to a remote village where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorizing the locals. Looks like it's set in the 1800s.

Five years ago, Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone (33, 33, and 34, respectively) resuscitated a comatose Saturday Night Live with three simple moves. (One, cut a hole in a box...) GQ spoke to the comedy trio about their roots, friendship with Weird Al, and what to throw on the ground, when it comes time to throw things to the ground. Or we just spoke to Akiva. Their voices all sound the same. It's impossible to tell.

GQ: It's going to be really hard for me to determine who's talking.
Jorma Taccone: We'll try to say our names before.
Andy Samberg: You'll know Kiv's baby when you hear her.

GQ: So, you guys have known each other since what, the seventh grade?
Jorma: Too long. This is Jorma. We met in junior high in Berkeley, California at Willard Junior High—I was in Spanish class with Kiv when we were 13 years old. How old were we, Kiv? 13?
Akiva Schaffer: Seventh grade, I was 11, 12?
Jorma: No, were we really? 12, I guess. 12. Holy *. And then we met Andy a year later, because we all went to the same junior high.

GQ: Do you remember exactly how you first became friends?
Jorma: I remember seeing Kiv in particular, because he had a Tony Hawk skater haircut, and I was pretty into that kind of thing.
Andy Samberg: I remember admiring them from afar. This is Andy.

GQ: That's pretty astounding, right? I mean, just most people's seventh grade friends turn out to work at the local gas station; you guys found your soulmates when you were 13.
Akiva: Yeah, we reflect on that often.
Jorma: We do.
Andy: We had other friends too, who might work at gas stations.
Jorma: That was Akiva.
Akiva: That was Andy.
Jorma: Oh man, this is going to be the worst.

GQ: How did the name Lonely Island come about?
Jorm: Kiv?
Akiva: So we were all living together in an apartment on Olympic Boulevard in LA, which is a very busy street. And Jorma, being the theater major, decided to bring home a VHS copy of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, but then it just sat there long enough that me and Andy were actually the ones that watched it, and of course it's a great movie: Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman. But still, I wanted to still make fun of Jorm for being so theatrical, so I wrote like a one-act spoof play, I guess you'd call it? A Tennessee Williams-style one, where I was going to have Jorma have to refer to our home as an island in the sea of traffic—the lonely island—and be very dramatic about it. Then we started calling the apartment the Lonely Island when we were out, as in: "Want to go back to the Lonely Island?" And our first videos were all in the apartment, the little experimental videos that we were just kind of doing. So they were always set in the apartment, we named the videos the Lonely Island.

GQ: Nice. I really love Turtleneck & Chain. It's great.
Akiva: Like, as a style, or the album?

GQ: Both, I guess. The first song, "We're Back," has a lot of pe*is-not-working-right outposturing each other. And that kind of seems to be a common trope with you guys. Is there a reason?
Andy: Calling it a trope seems to give that joke more—
Akiva: More credence.
Andy: More credence than maybe it deserves.

GQ:Well there's "Ji* in My Pants" of course and "I Just Had Sex," which has a line about lasting only 30 seconds...
Akiva: Okay it's fair to say penile inadequacy is definitely a trend in our stuff, yeah.

GQ: Is that for any reason?
Jorma: We're pretty big into self-deprecation.
Andy: And self-mutilation, am I right, Jorm?
Jorma: Nail on the head, Andy.
Akiva: We're really good at sex. We might be the best ever.
Akiva: That was Andy talking.
Andy: No that was Akiva talking!
Jorma: Spread it around. Be sure to spread that around.
Akiva: I mean, except for the times when we're terrible. Then we're not good. So like, when it's on it's on, you know what I mean?
Jorma: Like Donkey Kong.
Andy: We set the expectations really low in our songs.

GQ: Did you write Jack Sparrow with Michael Bolton in mind?
Andy: He was definitely the first person we wanted for it, yes. We came up with the premise for the song and then I believe Kiv said that the perfect person to do the hook would be Michael Bolton. And then we were basically relentless and didn't sleep until we got him to do it.

GQ: How did you convince him?
Jorma: On the first call he said he wanted to do it, and then it took another handful of calls to actually—
Akiva: There were lyrics he was uncomfortable with.
Jorma: Yes.
Akiva: It was really our charming personalities that put him over the top, though.
Jorma: We broke bread.

GQ: Wait, what were the lyrics that he was uncomfortable with?
Andy: Uh, we can't say that.
Jorma: They were terrible.

GQ: Have you guys ever heard from anyone who was mad you parodied them?
Akiva: I don't think so.
Andy: No, I'm sure they just curse in private.
Jorma: I bet President Mahmoud probably wasn't too keen on his video.
Andy: Oh, yeah. Ahmadinejad, I can say on the record, was probably not psyched on that video.
Jorma: He keeps emailing and emailing.
Andy: His Twitter feed was going crazy that whole day.
Jorma: Yeah. Little does he know, we barely check our email.
Andy: "I thought we were cool!"

GQ: Have you ever met Weird Al?
Akiva: Absolutely.
Jorma: Yeah, we're in definite communication. He sent us a bunch of gear recently.
Akiva: I was emailing with Weird Al last night, no joke.

GQ: Really? About what?
Jorma: It was I, actually.
Akiva: They had a special on Comedy Central of him performing live—
Jorma: He didn't send it to me, Kiv. I'm looking at the Blu-ray now. Is it Comedy Central?
Akiva: Yes.
Jorma: The Al-pocalypse tour, right?
Andy: I don't have kids yet, but I'm pretty sure he's going to perform my future son's bris.

Hilarious! Loved all these cameos and characters.

But I can't help but think that this was a waste of teaming up Andy Samberg and Katy Perry. They have both done amazing things, and together... well I expected more than something a little silly and weird like this. It's almost like Jorma or Andy wrote it without thinking about how to fully leverage Andy + Katy together.

Who was Abraham Lincoln? Anyone know? Caesar also looks familiar.

Just watched SNL

I'm on the east coast tonight, so I get SNL a few hours earlier.

It was a little disappointing. Andy and Katie were in a musical digital short, but it wasn't a classic. It was a strange song about being best friends and then it just keeps getting weirder.

Oh, well, let's see if Jimmy Fallon and Andy can pump out a musical digital short classic next week!

This week had guest appearances from Darrell Hammond, Alec Baldwin, Matt Damon, and Val Kilmer. That was pretty sweet. Alec had the best appearance, where he cleverly covered up hos own mishap that got him in the news (Alec pretended to be a piolot who apologizes to Alec for how he was treated). It's a clever way to subdue bad press for Alec.

Andy wasn't really able to shine this week, but Kristen Wiig had a few chances, especially with her new flirting character. More tomorrow!

We want the Jimmy Fallon SNL episode to have John Goodman and the Don Pardo 9000!

We've said it before, but I've noticed that when you title a blog after a statement and make that your focus, more people are likely to notice it and listen to you. So what's our statement?

During this episode

We want John Goodman to pretend to be a cast member and we want the show announced by Don Pardo 9000!

So those are our requests / polite demands. =^)

Confused why? Well...

Jimmy Fallon successfully prophesied that he would host SNL in December 2011 (he did so in December, 1998) -- Jimmy's on at 2:55:

And as you can see, the gag of including John Goodman on the staff would be a hilarious inside joke (and good for a lot of media press), as would including the Don Pardo 9000. Of course, they could go all the way and get actors to play cast members Drew Adams, Michael Butler, Arianna Cleo, and Kevin Wallarski... but just including John Goodman and the Don Pardo 9000 would probably be enough to sell the joke.

John Goodman was truly the ghost of SNL hosts present because that season (24, 98-99) he cameo'd as Linda Tripp on Sep 26 (Cameron Diaz hosted), Nathan Barnett on Nov 14 (Joan Allen hosted), Tripp on Nov 21 (Jennifer Love Hewitt hosted), and Tripp on May 8 (Cuba Gooding Jr. hosted). He had 6 cameos total that season, and Goodman hosted on April 10 (99) that same season (so 7 appearances that season). And he hosted consequetively in seasons 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 (this 98 season), 25, and 26 (hosting 12 times, total). So that sets the context as to why he was the ghost of SNL hosts present.

John Goodman had 21 total appearances from 89-03, which is more than any other guest during that time period. However, Steve Martin had 24 total appearances (15 hosting), and Alec Baldwin has had 22 total appearances (16 hosting). So John Goodman is third both in total appearances (21) and hosting (12).

Here's how Goodman stacks up for hosting the most:

So... Jimmy Fallon announced that he's going to host the December 17 episode of Saturday Night Live, with musical guest Michael Buble. It marks Fallon's first time hosting since he left the show in 2004, but fans shouldn't be too surprised to see him back in Studio 8H — not only has he done cameos on the show here and there, but back in 1998, SNL itself announced he'd host right around then. As you can see in the video, Alec Baldwin's monologue from a season 24 episode predicts exactly this: That Jimmy Fallon, as the host of Christmas future in this Christmas Carol riff, will host on December 12, 2011. Most people remember this episode for its Schwetty Balls, but perhaps its prescience will become its new calling card!

That's right! Jimmy Fallon was only 5 days off! (What's the matter, they didn't do their calendar math correctly and pick a date that lands on a Saturday, or did they think it was going to move to Monday and be called MNL instead?)

They obviously weren't thinking (or caring) about getting the date right. They just picked the same date as that episode that Baldwin was hosting (which was on December 12th, 1998).

I actually remember watching this episode back in 98. At this point in time, Jimmy was in his first year on the show (only his third month), he was a featured cast member, and a total noob to the show. So at the time I was skeptical if he would be popular in 2011. But he pulled it off!

However, I was excited about him at that point in time, because of his song during the October 4th episode...

These are the SNL bits he previously had done (at that point in time):

1. September 26, 1998 (Cameron Diaz hosted)
- He played Gilbert Gottfried in a Hollywood Squares bit; I wonder if Fallon's Gottfried is as good as Taran Killam's sweet portrayal

2. October 3, 1998 (Kelsey Grammer hosted)
- Bit roles in a commercial and a Mr. Peepers sketch

3. October 17, 1998 (Lucy Lawless hosted)
- 5 bit roles, including a Steven Tyler impression in a group sketch.

4. October 24th, 1998 (Ben Stiller hosted)
- Adam Sandler on Celebrity Jeopardy (this was memorable and a key bit that got Jimmy on SNL)
- A Jimmy Fallon song on Weekend Update (this was when I really noticed Jimmy and thought he was going further than he ended up going)

5. November 7, 1998 (David Spade hosted)
- Solid Howard Stern and Leonardo DiCaprio impressions in group skits. Actually the Leo impression was a voice during the legendary Kiwi meets Mango sketch (classic).

6. November 14, 1998 (Joan Allen hosted)
- 2 bit roles and solid Marilyn Manson and French Steweart impressions in group sketches.
- He really sold his Jerry Seinfeld impression in Tarmac Talk. So this was noticeable and impressive.

7. November 21, 1998 (Jennifer Love Hewitt hosted)
- 2 bit roles and a Michael Stripe impression in a Celine Dion sketch.

8. December 5, 1998 (Vince Vaughn hosted)
- A hilarious (but brief) Richard Simmons impression in the cold open.
- Lead in "Married Guys" with Will and Vince
- Ghost of John Lennon
- 2 more bit roles.

And then that brings us to the Baldwin episode on 12/12/98.

So while Fallon was proving himself by filling in his impressions (more often than Jay Pharoah and Taran Killam are today, but probably not as well as they are, because the only impressions Fallon had gotten as the center of a bit were his Seinfeld and Lennon), it was relly just his guitar song he did on October 24th where you started to wonder if he was the next Adam Sandler (and he's not, if you're wondering).

So taking all that into consideration, to have Jimmy stand up and say he'd be a hit in 13 years, it was a little gutsy on everybody's part (including the producers). It was funny enough to do anyway, but I remember thinking, "We'll see. If you keep doing song like that one you did and maybe pull out some hit characters like the awesome ones that were hits at the time... Spartans, Dog Show, Goth Talk, Mr. Peepers, Clinton, Celebrity Jeopardy, The View, Ladies Man, Roxbury Guys, Delicious Dish, Antonio Banderas Ah Yes Show, Judge Judy, Culps, Mango, Martha Stewart Living, Harry Caray, Celine Dion, Mary Katherine Gallagher, and Pimp Chat." My personal opinion is that the only bits he had that were worthy of those hits that his teammates had above were Jeffrey's that he did with Ferrell and Sanz and his guitar bits on Weekend Update. Other than those, I don't think he had anything worthy. And I think his movie career echoed that well.

(But to be fair, Shannon, Gasteyer, Oteri, Kattan, and Meadows also never had hit film careers, even though they were amazing on SNL; it takes a unique person like Ferrell or Wiig to transition from SNL to a hit film career... or Meyers, Murphy, Chase, Murray, Sandler, etc.)

That said, I think Fallon could have found a niche to be popular by being on a sitcom (maybe) or by hosting a Today Show, which is what he did when he accidentally took over Conan's spot (it was on purpose, but it was done with Conan's blessing at the time). And the only reason why Fallon is hosting is because he now has a hit show (Late Night). Just in time to host when he predicted (which is obviously the reason why they picked that date for him).

Now it seems like I'm ragging on Fallon, but Andy's in the same bucket that Fallon was in on SNL. Maybe Andy's in a better bucket because his shorts are so popular, but Andy doesn't really have any awesome skits like the ones I listed above (only a small handful exist, and Andy's digital shorts are definitely among the hits).

Andy Samberg is the guy who always loses the girl! Take a look at that guy sitting behind Andy and to our left of Andy. That guy completely loses it on Andy's last line there.

Unfortunately Andy was only in two skits this week (Batman and this monologue). Andy isn't really writing much for himself nowadays (except the digital shorts), so this usually just means the writers weren't thinking about Andy (and the other cast pitched in their bits).

Do you think Andy and the writers should try to write more material for Andy or give the other players a shot (like they did in this episode)?

He majored in film at University of California, Santa Cruz.

Akiva is 34 today!

Akiva has won one Emmy (in 2007 for Junk in a Box), he's received 10 total Emmy nominations (4 for writing on SNL, and was nominated for writing Junk in a Box, Motherlover, Shy Ronnie, I Just Had Sex, The Golden Rule, and Jack Sparrow. Akiva was nominated (with TLI) for a Grammy in 2009 for "I'm on a Boat". He has also won three Writers Guild awards and a Peabody award for writing on SNL. 1 Emmy, 10 Emmy noms, and a Grammy nom... not bad, Akiva & TLI!

Christina Evangeline is a model and, as of June 2011, now Mrs. Kenan Thompson. The two got married in the Arctic Room of the George Aquarium in Atlanta. Good for Kenan. Christina is definitely ”all that.”

Miley Cyrus to voice Adam Sandler's daughter in 'Hotel Transylvania' -- FIRST LOOK

Dracula, meet your daughter, Miley Cyrus. EW reports that the multi-hyphenate is joining the all-star cast of Sony Picture Animation’s Hotel Transylvania as the über-vamp’s teenage daughter Mavis. Adam Sandler is voicing the famous blood-sucker, who builds the titular resort for all manner of monsters (and their families) as a way of keeping Mavis from venturing out into the real world. Things get tricky after a regular guy (voiced by Andy Samberg) ends up at the hotel.

Check out an exclusive first look at Cyrus’ character below:

Cyrus will be in some great comic company, too. Among the actors playing the various horror-story creatures checking into the Hotel: Kevin James (Frank, i.e. Frankenstein), Fran Drescher (Eunice, i.e. Bride of Frankenstein), David Spade (Griffin, the Invisible Man), David Koechner (Quasimodo), Cee Lo Green (Murray the Mummy), and Steve Buscemi and Molly Shannon as a pair of werewolves with an overwhelmingly large litter.

I think this really goes back to a lot of the infomercial skits that were more common on In Living Color, SCTV, and 70s/80s SNL (specifically Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy were masters of the infomercial skits, where they established repeat characters with them).

Bobby Moynihan gives a quick look at what goes on during SNL writers' night.

This is very cool!

Basically Bobby Moynihan is a historian of SNL, and so having him "host" documentaries like this is a fantastic way for him to show off his knowledge and for him to help educate us! Awesome!

It's short and sweet, but I hope they do these backstage bits with Bobby more often! I know Fred and Marci used to do them, but I think Marci moved onto other shows and Fred has other projects (like Portlandia) to think about.

So this skit barely covers Cain's sexual allegations (women who he supposedly unsuccessfully hit on for affairs have come forward). But then it focuses on Perry's mistake (forgetting the third government department he would close) and then beautifully turned it into a Mice & Men reference.

Interestingly they showed Romney to be the intelligent and clever one in this skit.

This is Andy's third appearance as Rick Santorum, and all three were in Republican Debate skits.

Pretty funny! Andy Samberg reprises his Spider-Man jokes that he did playing the Broadway actor on Weekend Update. So instead of Andy playing the Broadway actor and appearing upside down on Weekend Update (with the flip jokes), he's playing himself auditioning for Spider-Man too late, also upside down and with the flip jokes. He also uses jokes from Kristen Dunst's appearance on SNL 10 years prior.

Technically it was 9 1/2 years ago, on 05.11.2002. That was Kirsten's only appearance on SNL. In her monologue, it was Horatio Sanz who appeared as Spider-Man. (Will Ferrell played George Bush in the Cold Open, and the skits included Jaret's Room, Dratch's Sheldon, the famous DeMarco skit audition--where Chris Kattan & Chris Parnell were the freaky dancers--with Eminem, and Tina Fey / Jimmy Fallon were doing Weekend Update.)

So what happened? Aleric got his credit. So what's the deal?

Wait, did Aleric just give it away without signing a contract???

Here's what Aleric said (in the article above), "At first it just come from me not charging no one. Like, I got a CD full of tracks, here."

And apparently he handed the tracks to Andy Samberg (and only Andy). Um, really? Did you sign a contract or anything?

Um, dude, it sounds like you just gave your music away, keeping it purposefully vague so that you could sue them later when they don't automatically pay you (why would they if they think you were giving them free music). I mean, if they thought it was free, then that might be the only reason why they even took it in the first place.

Picture this. Andy's at a party. You run up to him and scream, "Listen to my music! It's free! Take it now!" He does. He likes it. He uses it. Why does he listen to it and use it? Because you just said it's free. He wouldn't have otherwise done that.

Andy made sure Aleric got credit. Doesn't sound like a steal. Sounds like a miscommunication.

So instead of partying with Andy more and knocking on TLI's door saying, "I wrote your Emmy nominated sound track. Remember me? I've got more tracks and ideas and I want to collaborate with you. But this time, we need to do a contract? I earned it though, right? Sweet music, right?"

Instead of doing that, they slap the hand that gave them their shot and sue them??? Really? Is that a good idea (suing NBC, Universal, TLI, SNL, and Republic Records)? Do you not like working and making money? Because even if you win, no one will want to work with you (especially them).

So, what do you think? Does Aleric have a good point, or did he pretty much set up his own obstacles when he made them think that they were getting free music? Oh, and if Aleric or a friend are reading this, please leave a comment and give us more info.

Andy Samberg's gonna need a lawyer for this rap.

The Saturday Night Live funnyman and NBC have found themselves on the receiving end of a copyright infringement lawsuit filed by a St. Louis music producing team who allege Samberg swiped their tunes to use as the basis of two of the SNL Digital Shorts he did with his Lonely Island mates.

Here's the deal.

Per the complaint filed in a federal court in New York and obtained by E! News, Aleric Banks and Monique Hinds claim they gave Samberg instrumental music masters to which he put lyrics and then exploited with his Lonely Island collaborators, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, in his Emmy-nominated 2009 sketch with Rihanna called "Shy Ronnie."

According to court docs, the comedian then allegedly used other master tracks of theirs in the SNL sketch "Like a Boss," featuring Seth Rogen.

The duo is seeking a full accounting of all the profits so they can obtain both credit and producer royalties for the use of the compositions as well as unspecified damages and court costs.

Other defendants named in the action include Schaffer, Taccone, Universal Republic Records and NBCUniversal.

A rep for the conglomerate (also the parent company for E! Entertainment) was unavailable for comment.

This week, Episode 708 - Emma Stone will host with Coldplay as the musical guest: November 12, 2011. This is Emma Stone's second hosting gig, with one a year (last year was her first).

Next week, Episode 709 - Jason Segel will host with Florence + The Machine as the musical guest: November 19, 2011. This is Jason Segel's first time on SNL, even though his buddies Franco and Rogen are repeat hosts.

And a reminder that in December, Jimmy Fallon will host with Michael Bublé as the musical guest: December 17, 2011. They set that one up early so that Jimmy could fulfill his self-made prophecy. =^)

How Jimmy Fallon of him. This is Jimmy's first time as a host (because this is his first hit movie/TV Show after he left SNL). I love it when past alumni get to host! It's worth a shot just to see if it's entertaining (and to see if we want them back).

I could totally see Jimmy as a repeat hoster where they ask him back each year and he gets nominated for Emmys (like Tina Fey and Justin Timberlake). I hope I'm not jinxing it!!! =^)

Alas, there's no Digital Short this week. This is very disappointing, since we were hoping for a reunion song with Andy Samberg and Adam Levine, since their last venture was the hit "Iran So Far", and because Andy has given us three non-musical digital shorts (Stomp, V-Necks, and Drake Interviews), which suggests they might not have a strong year for musical digital shorts, and ultimately that's what people want. (Their success with musical digital shorts seems dependent on whether they made an album the previous summer; last year's shorts from the album were I Just Had Sex, The Creep, and Jack Sparrow, in addition to songs not originally intended for the album, Shy Ronnie 2 and 3-Way (Golden Rule).) So hopefully the dudes are thinking up some songs.

Anyway... let's talk about this hilarious and witty sketch...

All are on their game here. Bobby Moynihan is pretty funny as the god of harvest (I think the god of harvest should have been put on the spot more for economic responsibility), Jay Pharoah puts on some white makeup for a funny gag as Apollo, and Kristen Wiig makes a great bitter wife, who happens to have gotten crabs from making love with Andy Samberg's Poseidon.

Andy's Popularity

Well, Stephen, he does a lot of other things... skits, impressions, movies (he's got an Adam Sandler movie coming up and others), he hosts events and shows, he sells hit albums that are more successful than a lot of great music out there, etc. He's been nominated for 6 Emmys, won an Emmy, and has been nominated for a Grammy.

So does he do other things? Yeah, but our society as a whole (which you're a part of) determines what's popular, and this is what we determined is the most popular.

And when we determine that we like something a lot, that affects what the artists do in the future. So you might disagree about the humor of these songs, but there are enough people who disagree with you (in the hundreds of millions) that make the songs hugely popular in every way (SNL ratings, getting them awards, performances, selling CDs, etc.).

So there will be more simply because that is what society as a whole (which you're part of) is asking for.

It's kind of like voting. You might not have voted for the winning candidate, but the majority did.

His 2011 Emmy Performance

And how can you say his shtick is tired in reference to his 2011 Emmy performance (performing Jack Sparrow, Golden Rule, and I Just Had Sex)? Did you watch the performance?

First, Andy was nominated for three Emmys for three different songs in one year. That's gotta be a record in itself.

So for their performance, they combine all three songs into one medley!

Second, Andy and TLI obviously can't get Lady Gaga and Justin Timberlake from Golden Rule together, so instead he gets three hilarious comedians (who can sing) together to dress like them and perform for them (with John Stamos playing Andy Samberg).

Third, in one of the funniest performances, they have great singers belting out the songs at the end (Michael Bolton, Akon, and Maya Rudolph), as TLI marches by with a huge sign that says "#1 Sex Champions"! They aren't even performing their own songs!

Now Akon and Bolton can say that they performed together. =^)

Add to that some strange interactions with William H. Macy and some American motif going on, and you have something so crazy and random that people are calling it the best (and even more are calling it the funniest) awards performance they've ever seen.

So is his shtick getting old? It's comedy and music, but those are the only things in common here. Other than that, they keep breaking new ground.

We've already posted this way back (we've been blogging about Andy Samberg since 2005), but the blog is full of fresh readers, and we wanted to pull this back out!

The context is that Craig Kilborn was doing the Daily Show (this was before John Stewart made it awesome-er), and Craig did the 5 questions (Craig took that to his own talk show).

Needless to say, you can see that Andy was hilarious, even way back when. He set up the Five Questions and acted like he never heard them before. Classic Andy.

Akiva Schaffer and Bill Hader making a Henchmen movie

Hader talked about HENCHMEN, a movie originally written by Russell Sharman, Owen Egerton, and Chris Mass. Hader is currently working with The Lonely Island’s Akiva Schaffer to re-write the script with plans to make it for Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps Productions. Schaffer would direct and Hader would star.

Hader said, ”[21 Laps] came to us with this script that Akiva and I are now reworking… The film is about two guys who don’t realize it, but they’re two henchman for like the badguy in a ‘Bourne’ movie and then they slowly figure who that they’re working for the wrong guys”

Hader is also working on a biopic film for Ben Stiller about Vaughn Meader. Meader made it big in the 60′s parodying President Kennedy and then saw his career dissipate after JFK’s assination.

Akiva Schaffer previouly directed Hot Rod and was an Executive Producer on MacGruber. He is also directing Neighborhood Watch (Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill, and Vince Vaughn) and The Adventurer's Handbook (Jonah Hill, Jason Segel, and Jason Schwartzman).

It sounds like Ben Stiller has connected with the current SNL stars (he recently hosted and costarred with Andy Samberg in an SNL Digital Short about v-necks) and is using that to line up some great films. That will keep his career active!

So this classic digital short's song was on Incredibad (which was released about four months after this was shown on SNL).

They finally got permission to post it to their YouTube channel (likely to promote their records). The good news is that because it's on YouTube... all you international Andy fans can enjoy it!

I think it's funny that they rhymed "suck" with "duck" randomly and even put a duck in the video. Andy can sing better than this, which was partially done poorly on purpose, although I'm sure Andy would try to stay on key more nowadays.

The premise was good, but as you can tell, there just aren't enough funny jokes... just a lot of dry impressions. So that is likely why it didn't make the live show (they watch the audience's reaction and get a feel for how funny the skits are in order to decide which ones get cut and how they are re-ordered).

The Lonely Island's "Basically" - Jorma Taccone and Maya Rudolph on "Up All Night"

So Jorma Taccone was hired to do a supporting actor bit on Lorne's "Up All Night" with Maya Rudolph. Jorma played this former lover of Maya from the past (1993). They shot a music video together to show a clip during the "Up All Night" show. Here's the full version of that music video:

1993 style! Jorm and Che made a music video for NBC's "Up All Night" featuring the one and only Maya Rudolph! The full episode airs tonight (9/28/11) and Jorm's in it! This is the extended cut for your butt!

Joanna Newsom looks pretty and Andy Samberg poses for photographers on the red carpet during the 14th Annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on October 23, 2011 in Washington, DC.

Andy's connections to Will Ferrell... Will produced Andy in Hot Rod. Hot Rod was originally written for Will, but rather than act in it, he wanted to produce it, so he took it to Lorne, which landed them with Andy back in early 2006 (following the huge success of Lazy Sunday). Since then, Andy did the MTV Movie Awards song with Will Ferrell (about how cool guys don't look back at explosions). They also attempted a digital short that didn't click with audiences (when Will Ferrell hosted). I hope they try again!

Yes Andy Samberg and Joanna Newsom are still together and looking as happy and healthy together as ever!

I wish they cut it up like NBC does... then you could just watch the Andy interview. You can argue that they try to hook people into watching the whole thing and all the commercials, but that likely reduces overall views by setting the barrier higher.

Andy does a Swedish Chef and Nick Cage impression. Andy and the ladies talk about doing a Digital Short where they rob a bank. Then Andy shoots some hoops. You'll want to stop at 28:40. So we only get 5 minutes of Andy Samberg, but still.

Andy says "and movie stuff", but they don't ask him for specifics. He's had a few supporting roles (Friends with Benefits, What's Your Number, and the upcoming Hotel Transylvania and Aubrey Plaza's "The To Do List"), and he's in a lead in two upcoming movies, Donny's Boy (formerly "I Hate You Dad", with costar Adam Sandler) and Jesse and Celeste Forever (with costar Rashida Jones).

Since it was a question of what TLI was doing... Jorma Taccone is acting in the TV Show "Up All Night", and Akiva Schaffer is directing Neighborhood Watch (Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill, and Vince Vaughn), The Adventurer's Handbook (Jonah Hill, Jason Segel, and Jason Schwartzman), and Henchmen (a Bill Hader comedy about, you guessed it, the evil henchmen).

Jorma Taccone to play Maya Rudolph's ex-boyfriend in "Up All Night"

'Up All Night' scoop: 'SNL's' Jorma Taccone gives Maya Rudolph flashbacks

One of the masterminds of "Saturday Night Live's" digital shorts will be staying "Up All Night" this fall.

Jorma Taccone, one-third of the Lonely Island comedy team (along with Andy Samberg and Akiva Schaffer) that produces the digital shorts, will guest-star in an upcoming episode of NBC's new comedy, creator Emily Spivey tells Zap2it. He'll be playing an old boyfriend of Maya Rudolph's character.

"You're going to see flashbacks of them from the '90s," Spivey tells us. "They have a little song together and everything, and a music video."

"Up All Night" centers on new parents Reagan (Christina Applegate) and Chris (Will Arnett), who are trying to raise their baby while still keeping the trappings of their old life. Rudolph plays Ava, the host of a talk show Reagan produces.

Taccone is the second "Saturday Night Live" veteran Spivey (herself an ex-"SNL" writer) has recruited to guest-star on "Up All Night." Will Forte will also appear as a guy who's a little more at ease with his stay-at-home dad status than Chris is.

"Up All Night" premieres Wednesday, Sept. 14 on NBC. Taccone's appearance will likely come sometime in October.

SNL Lessons: Eddie Murphy was a genius

I've talked about this concept of edginess (edgyness).

Basically look at the first cast of SNL... they brought racism, sexism, spousal violence, death... everything was up and front. They dealt with it head on.

Now what Eddie Murphy brought to the table at SNL was that same edginess. Here's a great example...

Eddie was finding opportunities to play himself (a trick that Chevy Chase and Bill Murray also took to the bank in their film careers).

This bit dealt with animal violence, racism, and it was even touching on child abuse there at the end. But it's funny. It's blatantly sarcastic, so you don't take it seriously.

That's the edginess. That's what that Lifetime Gameshow skit had, and that's often missing from SNL. That's what the Dear Sister digital short had, and what most of Andy Samberg's digital shorts do with sexual topics.

SNL would do well to focus on that more.
