SNL in the 2000s - Documentary (SNL Special)

Here are clips from the documentary they aired on NBC...

First the promo...

"Saturday Night Live in the 2000s: Time And Again" airs on Thursday, April 15 9pm/8c

Andy's TV Guide photo is featured, and there's a still of him young and shaggy-tastic at about 28 seconds in.

==========

The story behind the Lazy Sunday from Saturday Night Live In the 2000s: Time and Again.

Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer talk about the making of two scenes from Lazy Sunday. Andy's in the Lazy Sunday clips. I wish they would show more of the interviews online.

=========================

Chris Parnell shares some never-before-seen dress rehearsal raps in Saturday Night Live In the 2000s: Time and Again.

Hahahaha. So the way Lazy Sunday came about is that Lonely Island pitched Chris to do one of these Weekend Update raps with him, and Chris sugggested that they just do a digital short like LI's previous online vids. And thus they went out to film Lazy Sunday.

=================

The backstory of the Sarah Palin rap from Saturday Night Live In the 2000s: Time and Again.

Hahahaha. Andy is one of the eskimos. Reportedly, Amy previously revealed in an interview that she sat down with Andy to get some rapping pointers for this rap. Apparently, Amy had this rap prepared, and as soon as she saw an opportunity (on Friday, the day before), she busted it out and sold everyone on it!

Bobby Moynihan played the moose and got shot by Amy Poehler. Nice!

========================

Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake shed light on the conception of the sketch in Saturday Night Live In the 2000s: Time and Again.

Andy Samberg - Amy Poehler called him Adam Sandwich

This was when Andy Samberg hosted the MTV Movie Awards in 2009. Amy Poehler won the best WTF Moment for urinating in the sink in Baby Momma. Her acceptance speech (and a shot of Jim Carrey):

Bleeped potty mouth; Andy got a nice call out from Amy Poehler!

And their relationship has progressed a bit from there. This season, Amy and crew has tried to get more guest appearances in Parks and Recreation. The guests have included Fred Armisen, Will Arnett, and the one and only Andy Samberg!!!

Vote for Andy Samberg as People's Most Influential

http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1972075_1972078_1972623,00.html

Andy is currently 74. Let's vote him up higher! Truly, this is pretty good seeing how Andy isn't in a ton of movies.

From the page:

Age: 31
Occupation: Actor
Previous TIME 100 Appearances: 0

There is a version of Saturday Night Live that only exists in blog posts and E-mail inboxes, and in that world Andy Samberg is king. The comedian, now in his 5th season with the venerable sketch show, is a pioneer of the digital comedy short: a brief Internet video so funny and compulsively viral that users can't help but forward them along. The humor tends toward the absurd and vulgar (witness his unspeakable duets with Justin Timberlake), but mainstream audiences are increasingly getting the joke: "I'm on a Boat", a collaboration between his comedy troupe The Lonely Island and rapper T-Pain, was nominated for a Grammy.

Is Robert Pattinson going to host SNL?

Could R-Patz Finally Be Hosting SNL?

SNL bossman Lorne Michaels has revealed that they've asked Robert Pattinson to host an episode of SNL this season!

In 2009, Lorne said that he didn't know if Pattinson would make a good host, but after seeing the way he handled himself on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, admitting it "went well" for R-Patz.

From:
http://perezhilton.com/2010-04-14-could-r-patz-finally-be-hosting-snl

==========

Saturday Night Live head honcho Lorne Michaels told OK! they’re still trying to get Robert Patttinson to play host!

Back in April 2009, OK! asked Lorne if R-Pattz would be hosting SNL.

“Not this season,” he said at Natural Resources Defense Council 11th annual Forces For Nature benefit in NYC. “We’re all locked in with the hosts for this year.”

But he still held out hope for securing the vampire hottie in the future.

“Yeah, yeah, of course,” he said.

“We asked him this season,” Lorne told OK! Monday night at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Presents An Evening with Saturday Night Live in NYC. “And then he did Jimmy’s show and that went well for him..”

It sounds like Lorne might be more confident in Rob’s comedic skills after seeing him on Jimmy Fallon’s show!

Back in 2009, he was slightly skeptical if the Twilight star would make a good host.

“Don’t know,” Lorne said. “You never know.”

But now he hopes he’ll host soon.

“Yeah,” Lorne admitted.

Even and Odd animation

Hello!

For those who care, we're called The Animation Empire because...

We're making animations to pitch, and we wanted to do some in the preschool/education genre. So we're pitching them to Sesame Street. It's hard to come up with compelling educational animation that's only a minute or two long, but we'll try a few things.

First up is Even and Odd, where two monsters teach you about even and odd numbers. If you've got a minute, could you go to the video's Web page and give it a higher rating? There are too many competitors out there running around rating everything low.

Oh, and please let me know what your kids think as we experiment and see what kids like (if you have any little ones at home).

Andy Samberg & Gabourey Sidibe SNL Promo

Will Forte ... John Edwards
Bobby Moynihan ... Susan Boyle
Andy Samberg ... Mort Mort Feingold
Jenny Slate ... Kristen Stewart
Jason Sudeikis ... Mel Gibson
Kenan Thompson ... Tyler Perry

Hahaha. Not all of these are funny, but it's just a fun excuse to bust out a bunch of impressions. I loved Abby's stoner and Bobby's Susan Boyle (though his singing is Nathan Lane). Lots of fun. I hope they do it again.

Kristen Wiig ... Target cashier

So they start off the MacGruber jokes with 3 other SNL characters wanting their own shows: Andy's # in a Box and Mother Lover singer, Kristen's Target Lady, and Kenan's Diondre Cole.

So what would Andy's character's movie be like?

Film: SNL Digital Short, The Other Man

Ryan Phillippe ... Kyle
Fred Armisen ... father
Bill Hader ... priest
Bobby Moynihan ... friend
Nasim Pedrad ... Megan
Andy Samberg ... guy
Kristen Wiig ... mother

What did you think? Another silly character for Andy. Andy should revive one of these characters in a live skit.

This was sort of the opposite of the jazz curse short with Jon Hamm (in this one, Andy was the curse instead of the cursed character).

Ryan Philippe SNL promo

Ryan Phillippe hosts an all-new SNL 4/17 with musical guest, Ke$ha.

Pretty funny jokes obviously written by Kristen. First joke is pretty funny, but the second one is basically Kristen's lying Penelope character.

Sweet MacGruber poster

CBS Films and Universal Studios have sent over a high resolution version of the new MacGruber movie poster. MacGruber stars Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillippe, Powers Boothe, Maya Rudolph and Val Kilmer and it’s the feature film version of the Saturday Night Live skit. MacGruber screened at SXSW and I’ve heard from friends it’s very stupid but extremely funny. Sounds like my kind of movie.

MACGRUBER Synopsis and Info:

Only one American hero has earned the rank of Green Beret, Navy SEAL and Army Ranger. Just one operative has been awarded 16 purple hearts, 3 Congressional Medals of Honor and 7 presidential medals of bravery. And only one guy is man enough to still sport a mullet. In 2010, Will Forte brings Saturday Night Live’s clueless soldier of fortune to the big screen in the action comedy MacGruber.

In the 10 years since his fiancée was killed, special op MacGruber has sworn off a life of fighting crime with his bare hands. But when he learns that his country needs him to find a nuclear warhead that’s been stolen by his sworn enemy, Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer), MacGruber figures he’s the only one tough enough for the job.

Assembling an elite team of experts-Lt. Dixon Piper (Ryan Phillippe) and Vicki St. Elmo (Kristen Wiig)-MacGruber will navigate an army of assassins to hunt down Cunth and bring him to justice. His methods may be unorthodox. His crime scenes may get messy. But if you want the world saved right, you call in MacGruber.

Release date: May 21, 2010

Rating: R

Genre: Action comedy

Cast: Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillippe, Powers Boothe, Maya Rudolph and Val Kilmer

Written by: Will Forte & John Solomon & Jorma Taccone

Sequel to Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

Good news and bad news, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs fans. Cloudy will be back! The sequel is in production. But sadly, we can exclusively reveal that the original film's directing duo is taking a backseat this time.

Earlier this week Pajiba reported a rumor that Sony was readying a sequel to the acclaimed Cloudy, based on the second children's book, Pickles to Pittsburgh. We really hoped this was happening, as we believe Cloudy was one of the most underrated films last year, and easily one of the best animated films even though it was snubbed at the Oscars. So we asked our sources and this is what we got back.

A source close to the production confirms that yes, there is a sequel in development. But directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller will only be creatively involved in the process, not directing this time around. Still the good news is the two will be working on the story, which is easily the most important part of the heart-warming first film. The classic jokes told in a modern manner paired with the plot's lovely message really sold this movie. And the new story is currently in development right now. We can't wait to see what actors return to their roles — Neil Patrick Harris had better return as the voice of Steve the monkey.

And just in case you don't remember how great Cloudy was, here are the first six minutes of the film.

From:
http://io9.com/5515454/cloudy-with-meatballs-2-is-happening--minus-the-original-directors

Here is a Amazon's description of Pickles to Pittsburgh:

We check back in with Kate and Henry as they eagerly await Grandpa's return from an unusual vacation. Kate dreams about a postcard Grandpa has sent, and the story begins.

What do you think? Do you think Andy will be tapped for it? Do you think it will be any good? Do you think the directors want to move on to something else instead?

Andy Samberg does a video shout out for Fesh!

On a recent Saturday night, the comedy community of both coasts gathered to fête Mitchell Stephen Fesh. At New York’s Upright Citizens Brigade, the bearded guest of honor sat amid a doting crowd to watch a tribute video to himself packed with stars from NBC’s Thursday night comedies: 30 Rock’s Jack McBrayer, Community’s Donald Glover, and The Office’s Ellie Kemper and Zach Woods (who plays Kathy Bates’s obsequious lackey). Woods applauded Fesh’s three-word name that “makes you sound like either an aristocrat or an assassin,” while Human Giant’s Rob Huebel and Paul Scheer taped themselves at UCB’s Los Angeles branch, amid a capacity crowd cheering Fesh’s name. And then came the Saturday Night Live encomiums: On came a video greeting from the cast's Fred Armisen, Will Forte, Bobby Moynihan, Nasim Pedrad, Andy Samberg, and Jenny Slate — as well as the show’s writers, interns, and the actor Jude Law, who was hosting the show that very night. Fesh shook with excitement throughout the evening as the praise rolled in.

But who was this mysterious Fesh, and why all the love?

To properly tell the legend of Fesh, we must go back to early February, when Chris Gethard, a UCB regular who has written for SNL and the Onion News Network (as well as a book called Weird New York), posted a video to YouTube called “Attn Sad Youth of America”: In it, he talked about how dark and lonely and confusing his youth was, and then he made an offer. If his depression resonated with anyone in his audience, he would like to fly that someone out to New York — “and for one night, at least one night, you will be a rock star. I will make sure that before you ever even arrive in New York City that everyone knows about you and what's great about you and is psyched to see you here.”

Read the rest here:

I saw Andy in one of the VIP balconies very briefly, wearing a grey hoodie and glasses. I didn't think it could possibly be him since it was a saturday night, but lo and behold, SNL was a rerun.

So it was the Chicogo concert on Saturday, 4/3.

And here's an article about it...

"The audience, too, loved it (enough for some people to bring flowers). And, Andy Samberg, I’m pretty sure, loved it. Now, there’s a guy with a big bouquet of flowers. Not to sound like that blond surfer dude on “TMZ,” but I caught Andy on the balcony with like, six dozen roses and a cup of coffee.
I’m guessing the coffee was for him."

Is Joanna Newsom's latest album a two-hour love letter to Andy Samberg?

I had a feeling that Joanna Newsom was up to something big. However, I definitely wouldn’t have guessed that she would go and release a three disc album, two hour album. Joanna Newsom’s first album, The Milk-Eyed Mender, was a batch of exquisitely written and sometimes clumsily (though more often transcendently) performed pop songs, cute enough for the teenage girls to love and literate enough for bearded college students to write theses on. Two years later Joanna, made a big splash with her five song, nearly hour long Ys, on which her songs took on new orchestral arrangements, became mystical and weird in that “Incredible-String-Band-meets-Van-Dyke-Parks” (literally) way and taught listeners the differences amongst meteors, meteorites and meteoroids. She continues to evoke an abstract, ancient, American mythos on Have One On Me, an album that encompasses the styles of her first two records but also makes forays into some interesting new directions.

Have One On Me contains three six song discs, each that could stand alone on their own. The disc I listen to the most is the first. Although great, it contains impenetrably dense songs from start to finish. Have One On Me’s songs range from under two minutes in length to over eleven minutes. Disc one features “Good Intentions Paving Company,” and “Have One On Me,” perhaps the album’s best two tracks. Joanna Newsom composes great music, although for the first time, her writing is becoming a bit redundant.

If Ys sounded like it should have been recorded in a spectral barn in 1969, Have One On Me is pure 1971. There are progressions like the one at the end of “Jack Rabbits,” over which Newsom sings of “making love” that evoke melodies played on swampy, overdriven guitars. “Soft As Chalk” has a certain jaunt post-chorus—the part where she bellows “Lawlessness!”—that evokes a heavy, gothic country and western, before giving way to a lovely, sparse piano line straight out of the saloon. “Kingfisher” is probably objectively Newsom’s “Stairway to Heaven.” It lacks an guitar solo and any particularly great climax, but has melodic similarities to that epic rock standard, and prominently features presumably hobbit-manned pan flutes. “You and Me, Bess” is alternately jazzy and Beatles-esque and while not straying from what has become something of a stock Have One On Me chord change, features one of the albums most interestingly written vocal melodies.

Love pervades the album, which is funny considering that the lyrics are probably about the dude who wrote “Jizzed in My Pants.” The misty opening track, “Easy,” evokes a somewhat ghostly, desperate need for love. Against a string and flute arrangement that fits the song perfectly, Newsom croons as eerily as she ever has, “Speak my name, and I appear.” “Good Intentions Paving Company” is Joanna’s best “pop single” to date despite its seven minute length. Several Newsoms, multi-tracked a la “Peach, Plum, Pear,” sing loving melodies that warm the ears the way sunbeams are absorbed into skin. A groovy, syncopated percussion track invites the listener to bob the same way he would listening to yacht rock in his car on a June day. Joanna Newsom finds herself on a new journey, making good use of the hackneyed life-as-road metaphor. Her lyrics are smart and endearing. She remarks on the irony of asking a lover to open his heart to her when she “can’t even open a honey jar,” and just before a sweet flugelhorn jam, she sings: “I only want for you to pull over and hold me / Till I can’t remember my own name.”

“Have One On Me” starts out spare and contemplative but eventually builds and swells to strange character sketches. It includes a lot of spider imagery. The arrangement of the song is interesting because while the harp remains constant, other instruments come in and out like scenes of a slideshow. The song features fiddles, mandolins and other bluegrass instruments that ornament Newsom’s lyrics and harp-playing meticulously, but disappear as quickly as they come. The song peaks with a minor key bridge, highlighted with horns and strings and gives way to a coda of wordless, weaving vocalization that sticks to the mind like honey from a tightly sealed jar. At its best moments, Have One On Me proves Newsom still has great ideas, engaging melodies coiled up in her mind waiting to spring forward.

Not every song on Have One On Me is great. “Occidental” is a somber piano ballad whose familiar melody seems to have been lifted from somewhere else. Its lyrics are good, but it climaxes limply and doesn’t have any of the twists that refuse to allow longer songs, like the album’s title track, to drag. Songs like “No Provenance” are very pretty and pleasant to listen to but aren’t as engaging as Newsom’s older work. Most of the longer songs, the ones that continue on the same part for a long time, begin to drag. “Sawdust & Diamonds” from Ys spends most of its time on one, two-chord progression, but the song builds tension gorgeously and engagingly, which is unfortunately rare on Have One On Me. “Baby Birch” starts out dull and stays that way for about five full minutes. It sounds like a dustbowl era murder-ballad and oozes viscously until its stripped down arrangement finally begins to blossom into something equally somber but sublime. “Baby Birch” isn’t a terrible song. It has nice guitar line when it hits its groove and its Asian-sounding coda is one of the album’s most memorable. It also probably features the album’s best percussion, think Paul McCartney’s drums at the end of “Dear Prudence,” but in slow motion and furious. It’s somewhat distressing to hear Joanna Newsom treading into Gillian Welch territory. Newsom taps into a certain weird American-ness, often. However, to hear her reduced to Americana would be depressing and almost does before the climax of this epic track.

The best slow song is “Going to California,” on which Newsom declares that her heart “became a drunken rut.” The pace is slow, but the writing (again fixated on the subject of love, this time from a melancholic perspective) is superior to many songs. She writes: “I wait all night, for you in California / Watching the fox pick off my goldfish / From their sorry, golden state / And I am no longer / Afraid of anything / Save the life that, here, awaits.” The orchestral swell of its climax and almost raucous shouts of “Caw, caw, caw” are weird and cathartic in a way that is distinctly Newsom’s own. A great line that pops up on one of the more lackluster songs is on “Ribbon Bows.” The line goes: “Sweet appraising eye of the dog / Blink once if God / Blink twice if no God.”

I haven’t penetrated to the very core of Have One On Me and would probably have written a much more in depth review if I had a year to write it. However, we all know about the importance of Kairos, and I’ve already pushed this back a bit. Ultimately Have One On Me is a good album with some fantastic songs. Alas, it falls prey to the trappings of being two hours and eighteen tracks long. It is hard to get through in one sitting because its tracks are pretty similar and very long, although I imagine it would score a nice night house-sitting with a lover and a bottle of wine. Songs like “Go Long” are good but almost indistinguishable at times from other songs on the album. Its highs are very high, but in the end, Have One On Me held itself back as a result of its excess.

Andy Samberg - to star in Wayans Brothers Twilight spoof!!!

Wayans brothers making 'Twilight' spoof! It was only a matter of time before the Wayans brothers, known best for making "Scary Movie" which spoofed slasher flicks, would tackle the latest industry trend -- vampires!

According to Marlon Wayans' official Myspace page, the trio consisting of Marlon, Keenen Ivory Wayans and Shawn Wayans are scheduled to start shooting "Vampire Movie" sometime this Fall. Like "Scary Movie" which primarily followed the plot of "Scream", their latest picture will poke fun at "Twilight" as well as a few other vampire films along the way.

While there weren't many details regarding the cast, Wayans did mention that Andy Samberg has snagged the role of Edward Coolman. He also wrote that Miley Cyrus would be making a cameo. If the film proves successful, the brothers plan to make a trilogy.

=============================

As a word of warning, this didn't work for Eddie Murphy's Vampire in Brooklyn.

I hope this isn't an April Fools joke.

So what do you guys think? Are you looking forward to the Wayans brothers' next project? Especially with Andy Samberg in the lead?

Enjoy!

Ask Andy Samberg Blog - Did Andy and Justin sing **** in a Box live?

This question comes from an Anony...

Did Andy and Justin sing **** in a Box live?

Actually the question was more like...

any information on that?

But essentially it's the same question.

Yes, Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake performed **** in a Box live at Madison Square Garden.

Anony even did us a favor and found the best recording of that song/concert that we've seen so far:

It's probably because this recording came from Justin Timberlake's site, so they have multiple camera angles.

We've posted about this concert several times; so if you've been with us for a few years, you already know about this. But I think it's worth another watch to check out this version.

I'm not sure who's idea this was. It could have been Justin's idea, excited that their song was such a hit. He had a concert coming up (January 07), and he wanted to add it in as a special performance.

Or it could have come from one of the Lonely Island dudes. Justin usually loves TLI's ideas, so I could have seen him going for it.

There were rumors that Jorma and Chester were also up on the stage, but I didn't see them in this video.

We also can hear that Andy didn't quite have his singing voice down. He is able to produce his voice (meaning work on it in a studio until it sounds right), but he's not on key here. That said, this was also in 07, and he didn't really even try singing until 2006 (most of their songs before that were rap). So his live singing voice might be even "better" now.

Enjoy!
