Is Will Forte the next to leave SNL?

All this talk about Maya leaving SNL has us wondering...

Is Will Forte the next to leave SNL?

Will Forte is not adding any crazy characters to the show. Do you remember Mike Meyers, Eddie Murphy, Chris Farley, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Chris Kattan, and Molly Shannon? They all had crazy characters and skits that they contributed to the show.

Right now, the only ones who've got that are Andy and sometimes Darrell (which is why they've kept him for so long).

All the rest of the cast are just funny performers. They're keeping SNL alive, but they aren't revitalizing it.

With Will, Fred, Keenan, Bill, Andy, Darrell, and Jason being funny male performers, with Andy and Darrell adding fresh buzz to the show, and with Keenan also being the best straight man they've had, Will's the lowest common denominator - the next to go. The only fresh things I've seen him do are a spelling bee and a song to his mom (plus he was funny once when he was fighting Andy for Drew Barrymore). Everything else he's done has just been funny acting, and the others do a better job with the funny acting.

Likewise, on the ladies' side, you've got Amy, Kristen, and now the New Girl, Casey (now that Maya is gone). There's nothing fresh going on there with the ladies (but we'll give Casey a chance). That said, I think Kristen is by far the funniest woman SNL has had (at least since Cheri, Molly, and Ana tore it up).

Andy Samberg - Tries to pick up Kristen Wiig (Lady Business)

Here Andy Samberg tries to pick up Kristen Wiig. Also features Tina Fey. This is from SNL on 2/23/08.

Looks like this new girl is replacing Maya Rudolph. About time. Since Seth Meyer is technically out, the next person to get rid of is Will Forte. Let's get some fresh blood in there! People who can do wacky characters!

Andy Samberg - SNL Recap, 07-08, Episode 1522: Riley's Way

We're continuing our new series of posts called SNL Recap, where we go through each episode of a season. You'll be able to click the category name and then go through every single Andy Samberg SNL skit.

-----------------------

Episode 1522 (Brian Williams with Feist) Season 33 11/03/2007
Sketch: Riley's Way

It's the very last shot of the very last episode of the best high school drama in the history of the CW, "Riley's Way." In caps and gowns, three students sit on the swings; they can't believe high school is over. Principal Jeffries appears to offer his advice for the future in the show's final line: "Live!" There's a technical problem, so the actors have to run the scene again.

Actor Barry, who plays the principal, knows he's going to get emotional at the wrap party, just like he did on "Quantum Leap." He wants to hang out with the young actors, but they're all starting on a spin-off next week, "Riley's Way, The College Years," and Barry learns that he's not going with them. In the second take, Principal Jeffries has different advice for the future, telling one actor to lose ten pounds another that he's gay, and the third to go to hell. The director yells cut. He can't put Barry in the spin-off. He's a great actor and he'll be fine; after all, he did "The Leap."

In another take, Principal Jeffries wears a baseball hat, claiming that he never finished his college degree, so he'll see the actors in the spin-off. Barry admits that Principal Jeffries wasn't the most popular character. He was just a man. He wishes all the actors good luck, hoping their next leap is the great leap home. Touched, the director calls in a writer; Principal Jeffries deserves a new ending. In the final take, a set worker plays a new character, the student who killed Principal Jeffries.

Of course, since this is an Andy Samberg blog, we're only hitting skits that Andy Samberg was in. We're starting with his third season, 07-08 (which was cut very short), #1522: Brian Williams with Feist.

-----------------------

Episode 1522 (Brian Williams with Feist) Season 33 11/03/2007
Commercial: Maybelline for Men

A bunch of guys sit around watching the game, waiting for Phil to bring the beer. The doorbell rings and the guys are stunned to see Phil wearing very heavy, feminine make-up. He explains that it's not women's make-up but Maybelline for men. He knows it's for men, and it's not noticeable, because it says so on the box.

Andy Samberg - Did he add to homosexual stereotypes in commercials?

Click to see this picture a little bigger:

So apparently there's a huge issue where advertisers are banking on homosexual stereotypes. Much of it is in good fun, but a lot of it seems to get too violent, where it becomes a form of "gay-bashing," whether intentional or not.

"Justin Timberlake returns to the Super Bowl for the first time since he co-starred in the Janet Jackson 2004 halftime-performance “wardrobe malfunction”—this time for Pepsi ( from BBDO ) , where he is forcefully pulled by unseen forces ( actually, a girl drinking through a straw ) across the landscape. He passes a window of what seems like a woman brushing her long blonde hair, but instead is a scruffy young man in a wig, perhaps imagining himself as Justin's former girlfriend Britney Spears, with large pictures of Justin covering the wall. A weird smile crosses his face ( played by Andy Samberg, co-creator of the popular “[Junk] in a Box” sketch from “Saturday Night Live” ) . Some may find the cross-dressing reference inclusive, while it is arguable that this is just a simple laugh at transgender people."

Of course, Andy's no stranger to gay jokes (Iran So Far) or even beastiality (Andy makes out with a dog).

So Andy's commercial didn't get as bad of a review against gay bashing as some other commercials did. Check out the full review of the Superbowl commercials and homosexual stereotypes:

If it wasn't for Sacha Cohen, Isla Fisher wouldn't have been in Hot Rod

"She was encouraged to try comedy by her fiancé Sacha Baron Cohen.

"You'd work at the surf shop in a bikini, you'd go to school in a bikini," Isla Fisher says deadpan over drinks in Los Angeles. "And if you were murdered, you would be buried in a bikini." No, she's not reminiscing about her Australian adolescence, but about her stint as a scantily clad teen in a 1990s Down Under soap.

"Those days are over for Fisher, thanks to her hilarious turn in 2005's "Wedding Crashers." She played a trust-fund, bipolar nymphomaniac who goes "Fatal Attraction" on her 6-foot-5 co-star Vince Vaughn. "There was just so much physical comedy to be mined when you're a tiny girl beating up a massive guy," says the adorably petite (5-foot-2) redhead, who, it turns out, is quite the firecracker.

"She has a killer wit you don't see coming and, according to her "Hot Rod" co-star Andy Samberg, "a super sailor's mouth -- an Australian sailor's mouth." Some think it's sweet...

"Still, it was Baron Cohen who urged Fisher to lighten up. "I was going up for a lot of dramas, and I wasn't having much luck," she says. "And Sacha was the one who said, 'You're crazy if you don't do comedy; you're one of the funniest girls I know!' "

"All too aware that Hollywood is a boys' club, Fisher is busy developing her own projects, including an adaptation of the chick-lit bestseller "Confessions of a Shopaholic," in which she'll play the debt-ridden protagonist, and "Groupies" with "SNL"'s Amy Poehler, "about rocker chicks who are no strangers to the restraining order." Fisher says, "It's tough to be in comedy if you're a woman. You've got to develop your own material or you'll end up playing the girlfriend [forever]." I think we speak for the potty-mouthed actress when we say, #@&%*+$!"

Andy Samberg - Used to work for Star magazine

People want a quick laugh,” Samberg says. When he was living in Los Angeles six years ago, he spent a few months temping, including a stint “filing stuff” at the tabloid magazine Star. He walked away with more than free paper clips: It was a crash course in the tedium of the typical cubicle drone. Not long ago, if you wanted mirth at the office, the options were grim: Xerox your ass or, worse, buy a Dilbert calendar. Today, all you need is a video of someone hurtling off a trampoline. “I’ve never been at work and thought, *, I could really get into a story right now,” Samberg says. “But it’s easy to watch a guy get kicked in the balls.”

Andy Samberg - Knows he can't do a thousand characters

"Two years ago, he was just another Saturday Night Live newbie, a Jewish boy with a floppy haircut, trying to sort out his place in the cast. He wasn’t the fat guy. He wasn’t the black guy. He wasn’t the guy who played George Bush. “He’s not someone who can do a thousand characters, and he knows it,” says his SNL costar Bill Hader. But Samberg quickly became the show’s funniest breakout star since Will Ferrell. And while it took Ferrell several seasons to hit his exuberant, cowbell-banging stride, Samberg just did what he’d been doing since graduating NYU four years earlier: He shot a ridiculous video."

Andy Samberg's cut Digital Shorts - The SNL Process for cutting a skit

As fans of SNL know, there's a long process in determining what skits get made. First the writers write up these scripts (either by themselves or as a team) and then submit them to the head writer (who is currently Seth).

The head writer okays a some of them to move forward. The writer then works directly with the actors they wrote into the skit and coaches them through the skit. They practice all week, with the guest host. Those are the skits that make it into the longer dress rehearsal on Saturday.

Then they show the skits to the live audience for a few reasons. First, this is a dress rehearsal so the actors get the best practice they can with the skit: in front of a large live audience.

Second, they use this audience to determine whether or not the skit is any good. If they have 20 skits, and they have to cut 6 of them, then they only keep the ones with the best response.

Now, how does this fit with Andy Samberg? In addition to Andy playing in a lot of these skits, he also creates videos for SNL (the Digital Shorts).

So they show these digital shorts to the rehearsal audience to see if they get the largest laughs. Nowadays, most of them do. The first season, with the Lonely Island dudes were making more songs, most of their videos made it past the rehearsal. However, in the second season, a few of their videos did not.

That means that the audience liked the skits more than the digital shorts. So some of those videos got delayed. One got cut.

Because they are videos, SNL just showed them again in a future rehearsal to see if it was funnier than the skits that week. I'm sure the context of the other skits around it would also change how funny it is. So, a few of the skits that got delayed at least one week include The Complaining Fast Food boss (starring Fred; anybody remember the title of this?), Nurse Betty, and Roy Rules (that audience must not have liked the crass rap for whatever reason). I think Nurse Betty actually got turned down at least two weeks. But they finally found the right show for it. In season 1, I believe that The Tangent got delayed a week (with Fred Armisen).

The video that never got shows was one where Andy was playing a cop who had lobster claws for hands. I heard that was pretty much the entire gag, so it makes sense that it got turned down. I believe it got turned down three times before they gave up on it.

This is also why there always wasn't a digital short every week. Some weeks were the delays where they weren't well received.

Plus, lately, some of the stars will have ideas for shooting a video of them in action (Brian and Peyton), and so the Lonely Island dudes make those videos instead.

That's it!

Andy Samberg - Lorne Michaels won't let him get a hair cut

"His gags often begin mundanely, then erupt into surreal logic. On a May SNL broadcast, Samberg frenched a talking sheepdog for 13 exquisitely interminable seconds. “To get Andy,” says Lorne Michaels, the creator and executive producer of SNL, “you have to value silly, to think that’s a legitimate way of looking at the world.”

...

"Samberg arrives for our interview wearing a thrift-store tee and battered skateboard sneakers, and his hair strikes a good-natured compromise between shaggy indie rocker and raffish ’70s soccer star — a trademark do so recognizable that Lorne Michaels has forbidden Samberg from changing it. "
