Andy Samberg announces J-Pop (SNL)

Show - J-Pop America Fun Time Now!

Anna Faris ... Jennifer Homstead
Fred Armisen ... girlfriend
Vanessa Bayer ... Rebecca Stelmachowiczison
Taran Killam ... Jonathan Cavenaughson
Andy Samberg ... announcer (voice)
Jason Sudeikis ... Mark Kaufman

Two college students celebrate their love of Japanese culture with their TV show "J-Pop America Fun Time Now."

Funny premise. White people pretending to be Japanese while their teacher is tortured by it.

My guess is that Taran Killam wrote this skit. He's wacky.

Enjoy!

Andy Samberg's Ras Trent with Kristen Wiig (now on YouTube)

So this classic digital short's song was on Incredibad (which was released about four months after this was shown on SNL).

Originally aired on SNL: October 25, 2008

They finally got permission to post it to their YouTube channel (likely to promote their records). The good news is that because it's on YouTube... all you international Andy fans can enjoy it!

I think it's funny that they rhymed "suck" with "duck" randomly and even put a duck in the video. Andy can sing better than this, which was partially done poorly on purpose, although I'm sure Andy would try to stay on key more nowadays.

A reggae song about the plight of being a white, upperclass, Ivy League Rasta. Kristen Wiig supports.

Track produced by Sly and Robbie

And then Jorma recommends some Real Reggae:

Andy Samberg in the "Tell Him" SNL skit

UPDATED: Removed the video (it was taken down). Let us know if you find it again! Updated on 11/23.
==============================

This is hilarious! Smart writing and stellar performances that ride the edges of cheesy and edgy.

So one SNL skit from the Anna Faris episode didn't make it to the Internet.

Musical Sketch - Tell Him

Anna Faris ... girl
Vanessa Bayer ... Kendra
Abby Elliott ... girl
Nasim Pedrad ... girl
Andy Samberg ... waiter
Kristen Wiig ... girl

Andy was a waiter, and the ladies were doing a song in a restaurant.

Summary: 50's-era teenage girls (Abby Elliott, Kristen Wiig, Nasim Pedrad, Anna Faris) use the power of song to teach their confused friend (Vanessa Bayer) how to use deception to land a guy in the modern world.

Leave a comment if you find more pictures or a video clip of it!

And here's the Transcript:

Andy Samberg is Mark Zuckerberg (Steve Jobs SNL tribute)

In this bonus sketch from dress rehearsal, host Charlie Rose welcomes guests Mark Zuckerberg, Arianna Huffington, Reed Hastings and Rupert Murdoch to discuss the legacy of the late Apple CEO, Steve Jobs.

This got cut from the SNL live show.

The premise was good, but as you can tell, there just aren't enough funny jokes... just a lot of dry impressions. So that is likely why it didn't make the live show (they watch the audience's reaction and get a feel for how funny the skits are in order to decide which ones get cut and how they are re-ordered).

Andy Samberg in the Anna Faris SNL Monologue

Monologue

Anna Faris
Abby Elliott ... Hanna Garis
Bill Hader ... audience member
Nasim Pedrad ... audience member
Andy Samberg ... audience member

Anna reveals what she's dressing up as for Halloween and takes questions from the audience, and meets someone with a lot in common.

Andy busts out a great audience nerd! Not quite as amazing as his Star Wars fan (Natalie Portman monologue) back in 2006, but still hilarious!

I love Nasim's question! Abby's impression is hilarious! I think they could have done more with that, though.

The Lonely Island's "Basically" - Jorma Taccone and Maya Rudolph on "Up All Night"

So Jorma Taccone was hired to do a supporting actor bit on Lorne's "Up All Night" with Maya Rudolph. Jorma played this former lover of Maya from the past (1993). They shot a music video together to show a clip during the "Up All Night" show. Here's the full version of that music video:

1993 style! Jorm and Che made a music video for NBC's "Up All Night" featuring the one and only Maya Rudolph! The full episode airs tonight (9/28/11) and Jorm's in it! This is the extended cut for your butt!

Thanks to x-tina Smith for the scoop!

Andy Samberg with Joanna Newsom at Will Ferrell's Mark Twain Prize

14th Annual Mark Twain Prize For American Humor Honoring Will Ferrell

Joanna Newsom looks pretty and Andy Samberg poses for photographers on the red carpet during the 14th Annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on October 23, 2011 in Washington, DC.

Andy's connections to Will Ferrell... Will produced Andy in Hot Rod. Hot Rod was originally written for Will, but rather than act in it, he wanted to produce it, so he took it to Lorne, which landed them with Andy back in early 2006 (following the huge success of Lazy Sunday). Since then, Andy did the MTV Movie Awards song with Will Ferrell (about how cool guys don't look back at explosions). They also attempted a digital short that didn't click with audiences (when Will Ferrell hosted). I hope they try again!

Yes Andy Samberg and Joanna Newsom are still together and looking as happy and healthy together as ever!

Andy Samberg gets advice from Barbara Walters (The View)

Here Jamie talks to Andy Samberg, and Andy shares the advice that Barbara Walters gave to him...

Andy should talk fast, save the show, no stage diving, and be funny. Andy wants to put Woopi and Barbara in a Digital Short.

Andy Samberg; Actress Sarah Hyland; actor Matt Prokop.

Watch the View interview video here:

http://abc.go.com/watch/the-view/SH559080/VD55148954/the-view-1019

That's the full video, so you'll want to skip ahead to 23 minutes (the third tick) to watch the Andy Samberg interview. Just click ahead on the bar and watch whatever commercials they force you to. That's a lame system.

I wish they cut it up like NBC does... then you could just watch the Andy interview. You can argue that they try to hook people into watching the whole thing and all the commercials, but that likely reduces overall views by setting the barrier higher.

I feel like I need to Tivo/DVR my Internet videos. =^)

Andy does a Swedish Chef and Nick Cage impression. Andy and the ladies talk about doing a Digital Short where they rob a bank. Then Andy shoots some hoops. You'll want to stop at 28:40. So we only get 5 minutes of Andy Samberg, but still.

Andy says "and movie stuff", but they don't ask him for specifics. He's had a few supporting roles (Friends with Benefits, What's Your Number, and the upcoming Hotel Transylvania and Aubrey Plaza's "The To Do List"), and he's in a lead in two upcoming movies, Donny's Boy (formerly "I Hate You Dad", with costar Adam Sandler) and Jesse and Celeste Forever (with costar Rashida Jones).

Since it was a question of what TLI was doing... Jorma Taccone is acting in the TV Show "Up All Night", and Akiva Schaffer is directing Neighborhood Watch (Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill, and Vince Vaughn), The Adventurer's Handbook (Jonah Hill, Jason Segel, and Jason Schwartzman), and Henchmen (a Bill Hader comedy about, you guessed it, the evil henchmen).

Thanks to SJCSJC1 for finding the videos!

Jorma Taccone to play Maya Rudolph's ex-boyfriend in "Up All Night"

'Up All Night' scoop: 'SNL's' Jorma Taccone gives Maya Rudolph flashbacks

One of the masterminds of "Saturday Night Live's" digital shorts will be staying "Up All Night" this fall.

Jorma Taccone, one-third of the Lonely Island comedy team (along with Andy Samberg and Akiva Schaffer) that produces the digital shorts, will guest-star in an upcoming episode of NBC's new comedy, creator Emily Spivey tells Zap2it. He'll be playing an old boyfriend of Maya Rudolph's character.

"You're going to see flashbacks of them from the '90s," Spivey tells us. "They have a little song together and everything, and a music video."

"Up All Night" centers on new parents Reagan (Christina Applegate) and Chris (Will Arnett), who are trying to raise their baby while still keeping the trappings of their old life. Rudolph plays Ava, the host of a talk show Reagan produces.

Taccone is the second "Saturday Night Live" veteran Spivey (herself an ex-"SNL" writer) has recruited to guest-star on "Up All Night." Will Forte will also appear as a guy who's a little more at ease with his stay-at-home dad status than Chris is.

"Up All Night" premieres Wednesday, Sept. 14 on NBC. Taccone's appearance will likely come sometime in October.

SNL Lessons: Eddie Murphy was a genius

I've talked about this concept of edginess (edgyness).

Basically look at the first cast of SNL... they brought racism, sexism, spousal violence, death... everything was up and front. They dealt with it head on.

Now what Eddie Murphy brought to the table at SNL was that same edginess. Here's a great example...

Eddie talks about moving into his own apartment.

Is this video not showing for you? Leave a comment!

Eddie was finding opportunities to play himself (a trick that Chevy Chase and Bill Murray also took to the bank in their film careers).

This bit dealt with animal violence, racism, and it was even touching on child abuse there at the end. But it's funny. It's blatantly sarcastic, so you don't take it seriously.

That's the edginess. That's what that Lifetime Gameshow skit had, and that's often missing from SNL. That's what the Dear Sister digital short had, and what most of Andy Samberg's digital shorts do with sexual topics.

SNL would do well to focus on that more.

Any thoughts on this topic?

I'll start a new SNL category/tag/label called "SNL Lessons." Enjoy!

Andy Samberg was on The View today!

Just a quick note that Andy was with the ladies of The View on ABC!

Thanks to SamJae for the scoop!

Wednesday, October 19th - Andy Samberg ("Saturday Night Live"); ABC's "Modern Family" star Sarah Hyland and "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" star Matt Prokop (Disney Channel's "Geek Charming").

SNL’s Andy Samberg dropped by to share a few laughs and tell us how he gets A-List celebs to star in his outrageous digital shorts, and his favorite people to impersonate on the show! Our studio audience was happy to go away with his CD Turtleneck & Chain, which has all his hilarious hit songs!

Andy Samberg hates on Lord Wyndemere (SNL)

Sketch - Lord Wyndemere

Anna Faris ... Debbie (daughter)
Paul Brittain ... Cecil (boyfriend)
Bill Hader ... Turlington
Andy Samberg ... Stephen (brother)
Jason Sudeikis ... Greg (dad)
Kristen Wiig ... mother

A girl introduces her family to her new boyfriend, Cecil, who has everyone but dad thinking he's a fop.

Hahahaha. Andy beautifully supports as the brother of Anna Faris in this hilarious Paul Britain skit. I think the main star here is Jason Sudeikis, who channels his Will Ferrell yelling father here.

Andy was in 7 skits this week (same as Anna Faris and Kristen Wiig)!

Enjoy!

Andy Samberg is in a gay bar (Rick Santorum in SNL GOP Debate)

Show - Yet Another GOP Debate

Vanessa Bayer ... Sandy Schaub
Paul Brittain ... Ron Paul
Bill Hader ... Rick Perry
Bobby Moynihan ... Newt Gingrich
Andy Samberg ... Rick Santorum
Jason Sudeikis ... Mitt Romney
Kenan Thompson ... Herman Cain
Kristen Wiig ... announcer (voice)
Kristen Wiig ... Michele Bachmann

It's time for another GOP debate and Herman Cain expands on his plan to simplify government policy.

Ha! Kenan gets to star in this one as Herman Cain gains in popularity. The actual Cain is a bit of a financial genius (or at least was; he took down the Clinton healthcare package in one evening back when he was the CEO of Godfather), but it's still interesting to see a business man slug it out with governors and senators (and surprising to see him gain traction).

Anyway, Kenan did pretty good here, but I can't help but think they could bring Kenan's version of Cain up a few notches by focusing on the craft of impersonation and make him a little wilder. Maybe they should have Jay Pharoah doing Cain? Heck, if Cain and Obama go at it, SNL could have Jay Pharoah do a double (non-live) impersonation where he plays both Cain and Obama (like how Dana Carvey did George Bush Sr and Ross Perot, which won him an Emmy).

Anyway, Andy's Santorum doesn't get much air time here... just the mostly visual gag that they stuck him in a gay bar. This is Andy's second appearance as Santorum (9/24 this season and this week). Santorum was also impersonated once by Chris Parnell back on 05.17.2003.

Bill Hader messes up once here and Vanessa Bayer messes up multiple times (but she gets her groove going after a rough start).

Likely this was written as the Cold Open, but they came up with something they liked better. Not only is this what they usually do for Cold Opens (politically charged), but Anna Faris isn't in it (also usually reserved for political Cold Opens). However, they still thought it was funny, so they didn't remove it from the show.

Enjoy!

Andy Samberg is Boy Tanya (SNL)

Hahahaha. Wow, this is edgy and super clever. Reminds me of the original SNL. A rare gem. Watch it noooooooowwwww!

Lifetime Gameshow - What's Wrong With Tanya?!

Anna Faris ... Mary Jo Beth Jojo
Vanessa Bayer ... Mary Jo Williams
Abby Elliott ... Tanya
Bill Hader ... Vince Blake
Andy Samberg ... Boy Tanya
Kristen Wiig ... announcer (voice)
Kristen Wiig ... JoBeth Anderson

Where did SNL suddenly get its edginess for this skit? Who wrote this masterpiece?

I'm not sure. I read somewhere that Vince Blake (Bill Hader's character) is a recurring character, but I'm still looking into that.

Anyway, this is edgy because it throws out sexual abuse as jokes, something that the original SNL players wouldn't have been afraid to do (they cut at everything from violence, to beating women, to sexism, to racism... anything edgy). Take Andy Samberg's male Tanya character. The jokes there are that he was sexually abused by his teacher and can't read. Wow. That's intense that (1) They presented those statements as jokes and (2) They got the audience (and me) to laugh at that. Wow.

And then it's super clever, because it is based in this world where the Lifetime movie conditions of life are actually reality (such as the fake raking, all the moms wear similar clothes, all the moms have similar names, all the kids are named Tanya, and Bill Hader's eruptions of control over Anna Farris). They created their own reality that mocks Lifetime movies. It's truly amazing.

And yes, Andy Samberg's looks here are hilarious. Andy is starting to beat Kenan for best looks when never saying a line. =^)

What did you think? Are you as much in awe of it as I am?

Enjoy!

Andy Samberg is a Jewish Willy Wonka (Ben Stiller Monologue on SNL)

UPDATE: I added images of the skits and a little more info! Originally posted 10/13/11.
=============================

Unfortunately, there's no video that I can find, but here is some info:

SNL Monologue

Ben Stiller
Paul Brittain ... pickle
Bobby Moynihan ... hamburger
Andy Samberg ... Jewish Willy Wonka

So likely there was a musical piece involved that NBC can't secure the rights for. They also cut it from the full episode that's available online.

Summary: Famished from not eating all day because of Yom Kippur, Ben Stiller is treated to a delightful array of Jewish foods by the Jewish Willy Wonka (Andy Samberg).

This is a hilarious but psychadelic concept! And it's quite a set for a monologue!

And also this Best of Both Worlds skit isn't available online...

Show - The Best of Both Worlds

Ben Stiller ... Mandy Patinkin
Hugh Jackman ... Daniel Radcliffe
Abby Elliott ... Nancy Grace
Bill Hader ... Clint Eastwood
Bill Hader ... announcer (voice)
Bobby Moynihan ... Richie
Andy Samberg ... Hugh Jackman

The Best of Both Worlds Summary: Hugh Jackman (Andy Samberg) interviews more fellow actors who have tackled film roles that reveal two different sides of their personas.

Recurring Characters: Hugh Jackman, Nancy Grace, Clint Eastwood, Richie.

Interestingly, Andy Samberg played Hugh Jackman, and Hugh Jackman appeared in a cameo as Daniel Ratcliffe. The concept is that the actors act and dress like their characters. This is Andy's second time doing this skit (first was on 04.09.2011, last season). Andy is the only person on SNL to impersonate Hugh Jackman.

Let us know if you find videos or more images of either of these skits (comment below).

Andy Samberg interviews Drake (SNL Digital Short)

Ha! I often wonder if the digital short will be with Andy Samberg this week (thinking back to when the host or Fred Armisen take over... it's usually just not as funny if Andy isn't involved in some way).

And this week I wasn't disappointed!

Get to know international music sensation Drake in ways you've never seen.

This idea has its roots back when Andy had a short interview with Justin Timberlake that ended after the first question, when Andy asked Justin when he was going to make music again and stop acting.

Similarly, this concept is a series of short interviews with the same person, Drake. They make even less sense than the Timberlake one did. =^)

Which was your favorite bit here? I liked the dubs. So basic, but still very funny.

Anna Faris, Jason Sudeikis, Kenan, & Drake (SNL Promos)

Anna Farris and Drake warm up in 8H for this weekend's SNL

I like the first one where Jason is yelling at Anna!

And here's the Kenan and Anna Facebook promo:

Anna Faris and Kenan Thompson are excited to work together again on Saturday Night Live.

Awww, they hug! Are you getting any trouble viewing that second video?

I wonder what Andy's going to do with Anna tonight. They didn't do anything memorable together last time Anna hosted. It was 9/27/08. Andy was only on it once (in a Deep Dish skit). There was no digital short. The emphasis was on Amy Poehler and Tina Fey doing the political thing (Hilary Clinton, Katie Couric, and Sarah Palin).

Do you think Andy and Anna will do anything together?

Enjoy!

Andy Samberg & Joanna Newsom DOUBLE DATE with Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux

Yes, Andy Samberg is STILL DATING Joanna Newsom! Thanks to SamJae for the scoop!

It's kind of a crazy match-up, but Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux partied with Ben Stiller last Saturday:

http://wonderwall.msn.com/entertainment/jennifer-aniston-justin-theroux-party-with-ben-stiller-after-saturday-night-live-1647126.story

Aniston, 42, and Theroux, 40, arrived to NYC's Primehouse around 1 a.m. Sunday morning. They sat in a booth with SNL castmembers Andy Samberg and Bill Hader. A source told Us they had "a variety of plates sent to them" during their 45 minutes at the table. "They grabbed a few drinks, [and] Jen ordered a Grey Goose on the rocks!"

So that's the connection. Jennifer and Justin came to party with Ben and the SNL cast, they met and clicked with Andy Samberg, and then they returned to the same restaurant four days later on a double date with Andy and Joanna...

==============================

Jennifer Aniston, Justin Theroux double date with Andy Samberg

Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux went on a double date with funny man Andy Samberg and his girlfriend, Joanna Newsom. The couples enjoyed a night out in New York City—and each others company.

According to PEOPLE, the foursome partied at Primehouse, sitting all together, sharing food and drinks. They looked like they were having a great time, according to an insider, and there were plenty of laughs to go around.

Then there's more gossipy stuff about Jen here:
http://celebs.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474980565563

So there you go! Andy and Joanna are dating a power couple! Well, Jennifer in any couple becomes a power couple. =^)

Justin is a solid supporting actor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justin_Theroux), but he's also made a name for himself as a scriptwriter on Tropic Thunder (his original story) and Iron Man 2. He's following up the quirky Tropic Thunder (a comedy that got Robert Downey Jr. an Oscar nomination, which is VERY rare in a comedy) with the Tom Cruise vehicle (Tom was also in Tropic Thunder), Rock of Ages. I hope to see the same quirky humor that was in Tropic Thunder.

And... of course... Yes, Andy Samberg and Joanna Newsom are still together!!!

I have to admit, they're pretty good at keeping their private lives private, which is definitely a good thing. Glad they can do it.

I wonder if Andy's going to steal Jennifer away from Justin, after all a woman's heart is hidden in her smile.

Ha!

What do you think? Are you excited to see Andy still with Joanna? Are you excited to see Andy hanging with Jennifer and Justin?

Enjoy!

Anna Faris and Kenan Thompson SNL Promo

In SNL news, Anna Faris hosts an all-new SNL 10/17 with musical guest, Drake.

Apparently her name is pronounced "awna".

No waaaay! I have to say, I've been using this joke for years, thinking that the fact that it's annoying makes it even funnier. You know, I'd bring in our huge fan and say, "I found your biggest fan!" Or I'd turn to the fan if it was close by, hold it like I'm holding it's hand, and say to it, "You know. I don't think I've told you this, but I'm your biggest fan."

Extra weird-o points. It's obviously a Kenan joke (his humor is right up that alley... silly-tastic).

Anyway, I hope Anna hooks up with Andy Samberg this week in a sweet skit and digital short. Do you like Anna Faris?

Enjoy!

SNL - Emmy nominations for individual performances

So we once posted a list like this, but I want to do a version that also gives credit to the song performances, since those are also individual performances. Plus we added 2011.

- (nom) Song: Andy Samberg (Golden Rule)
- (nom) Song: Justin Timberlake (Golden Rule)

- (win) Guest Actor: Justin Timberlake (host)

Andy Samberg's Emmy Win and six total nominations come from writing the lyrics and music of his hit songs (**** in a Box, Mother Lover, Shy Ronnie, I Just Had Sex, Jack Sparrow, and Golden Rule), but I'm convinced that the performances make those songs. It's interesting to look at the list and see that the only winners (who were players) are Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner, Dana Carvey, Andy Samberg, and Tina Fey (all have won 1 each). But the list makes more sense as you see the names all the nominees (who were players):
  • Chevy Chase - 1 win; 2 nominations
  • John Belushi - 2 nominations
  • Gilda Radner - 1 win; 2 nominations
  • Dan Aykroyd - 1 nomination
  • Jane Curtain - 1 nomination
  • Eddie Murphy - 2 nominations

  • Will Ferrell - 1 nomination
  • Andy Samberg - 1 win; 6 nominations
  • Tina Fey - 1 win; 4 nominations
  • Amy Poehler - 2 nominations
  • Kristen Wiig - 3 nominations

This is a pretty accurate list of who was great on the show and who stood out the most (I also think Bill Murray is great, but it makes sense that he wasn't nominated because he didn't break out above his co-actors until his movies).

There were many late bloomers on SNL who didn't break out until after they left the show: Bill Murray, Gilbert Gottfried, Jim Belushi, Martin Short, Conan O'Brien, Damon Wayans, Kevin Nealon, Ben Stiller, Sarah Silverman, Janeane Garofalo, Jay Mohr, Chris Rock, and Rob Riggles. Plus several players were popular on the show, but because of their silly style of humor, they were never nominated for awards, but they were also successful after they left SNL: Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, David Spade, Rob Schneider, Chris Kattan, and Jimmy Fallon.

Andy Samberg and Ben Stiller gawk at Shana (SNL)

The male guests are excited for the beautiful Shanna to make an appearance, but most of them are turned off by her peculiar behavior.

Sketch - Halloween Party

Ben Stiller ... Mr. Jurgens
Abby Elliott ... Becky
Taran Killam ... guy
Andy Samberg ... Patrick
Kenan Thompson ... guy
Kristen Wiig ... Shana

Hahahaha. This is Wiig's fourth appearance as Shana:

12.06.2008
01.09.2010
10.02.2010
10.08.2011

It was actually on the Jimmy Fallon show that Jimmy mentioned to Kristen that his favorite character she did was Shana (she had only done it once). After that she did it once each season.

Andy Samberg has been in all four (along with Kenan). Taran took over for Will Forte for the third one last season.

Enjoy!

Ben Stiller's Zoolander VS Bill Hader's Stefon (SNL)

Not Andy news, but it's pretty much legendary so here's a bonus clip...

Stefon gives Seth some hot tips for enjoying Manhattan this fall and has his friend, Derek Zoolander, gives his recommendations as well.

Weekend Update
Seth Meyers
Bill Hader ... Stefon
Ben Stiller ... Derek Zoolander

Stiller's reportedly working on a Zoolander 2 film! Can't wait!

Andy Samberg and Ben Stiller: V-Neck Showdown (SNL Digital Short)

UPDATE: Added the image on 10/17/11.

A man shopping for some new shirts (Andy Samberg) decides to see how he looks in a V-neck and quickly realizes its not his look.

SNL Digital Short - V-Neck

Ben Stiller ... guy
Paul Brittain ... police officer
Taran Killam ... Hansen
Bobby Moynihan ... police officer
Nasim Pedrad ... girl
Andy Samberg ... guy

Andy and Ben have a V-Neck Showdown (reminds me of the "Walk-Off" in Zoolander). Andy wins (sort of).

Yeah, in the end it went exactly where I thought it was going when Andy and Nasim were talking about a deep V-Neck.

Hilarious! I don't know if Ben's weird character helped any, but it was very funny!

What did you think? We haven't heard from you guys for awhile.

Enjoy!

Ben Stiller's SNL history

   Musical Guest: Drake

TBD (37.TBD)
   December 17, 2011
   Host: Jimmy Fallon
   Musical Guest: Michael Bublé

So in honor of Ben Stiller hosting tonight, here is his SNL history...

Ben Stiller: This marks the second time Ben Stiller has hosted. He was first on the show as a guest video cameo (as Tom Cruise in "The Hustler of Money") in 1987, followed it up with a brief stint on the show as a featured player in the 88-89 season (best known for his Eddie Munster).

He left the show a little miffed, probably because he found it hard to get his ideas on air (in the 88-89 season, he was competing against established stars and Emmy nominees like Jon Lovitz, Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, favorites like Kevin Nealon, Dennis Miller, Al Franken, and future Emmy nominee and star Mike Meyers. It was probably highly competitive and not the best time to get your shtick on the air.

He next tried to start his own show to showcase all the ideas he had, which was the Ben Stiller Show (with Andy Dick, Bob Odenkirk, and future SNL alumni Janeane Garofalo). It only lasted one season, but it won Ben an Emmy and set him up for films. (His Emmy was for writing, and was shared with folks who include Judd Apatow, Bob Odenkirk, and David Cross.)

Ben returned to SNL (forgiving any frustrations, as SNL was a completely different show with different folks running it) about 10 years later to host when Will Ferrell was on (10/4/98). Ben likely was impressed by how funny Will and the current cast was. Ben famously played Tom Cruise again, this time on Celebrity Jeopardy while Jimmy Fallon pulled out his awesome Adam Sandler impression (Sandler was a friend of Stiller's and Judd's, and in Funny People there's a clip of Sandler making crank calls with Stiller and Judd while they were making The Ben Stiller Show).

Stiller must have enjoyed Will Ferrell, because he appeared with him again two years later (2/5/2000) in an Adam McKay short film, The Heat is On (wow; you should see that).

Stiller was set to come back to SNL the following season. However, after 9/11, Stiller and SNL (Marci Klein has spoken of this) disagreed whether or not SNL should go on so soon after the event. Stiller canceled his hosting gig (probably reasoning that it wasn't respectful), but the show producers thought it was the perfect time to be entertained and to "help people" in taht way. So Klein told Stiller off for that, and it was probably a bad experience for Stiller. He didn't return for another 9 years or so (interestingly not until Marci stepped down from Producer to be a Consulting Producer) until guest appearing with his friend Robert Deniro last season on 12/4/10 in two hilarious bits.

So his experience must have been favorable, because he agreed to host this season.

Check out this video with the best of Ben Stiller on SNL:

Photos of Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg filming Donny's Boy (I Hate You Dad)

Sometimes the titles are long. That's how we roll.

Adam Sandler dons a wig to film scenes for 'I Hate You, Dad' at a community center that has been made to look like a women's jail. In between takes, Adam kept jumping into an Escalade to cool off. Andy Samberg was also on set...

Andy Samberg gets out of the "cool car" (cool meaning it kept them cool in the heat)...

Andy approaches the ladies! Go Andy Go!

Images here:

Can't wait for the film! It better be a hit!

Sandler's only flop so far was Little Nicky, although I'm beginning to wonder if Jack and Jill (Sandler's next film, due in November) might be another flop. However, Sandler has had 10 hits after Little Nicky that he's starred in and produced under his Happy Madison team. So he's pretty much a sure thing for pumping out hits... but that could change at any moment. (Not including Sandler's dramatic films or cameos which weren't produced by this team for the purpose of being hits like "Donny's Boy" is.)

What do you think?

Enjoy!

Andy Samberg - will be on Portlandia Season 2

Andy Samberg, Kristen Wiig, Penny Marshall and More to Stop by "Portlandia"

IFC announced some of the guest stars who will be visiting the show when it returns in January...

This season's guest stars include a who's who of comedy, including Penny Marshall ("Laverne and Shirley"), Jack McBrayer ("30 Rock"), Tim Robbins ("The Shawshank Redemption"), Andy Samberg ("SNL," Lonely Island), Amber Tamblyn (127 Hours, "House") and Kristen Wiig ("Bridesmaids," "SNL").

As any fan can tell you, "Portlandia" stars Fred Armisen ("SNL") and Carrie Brownstein (Wild Flag, Sleater-Kinney) as a variety of wonderfully eccentric characters including Peter and Nance, a bohemian couple caught up in the organic and local food movement; Bryce Shivers and Lisa Everesman, an arty and obsessive couple; and Toni and Candice, the formerly activist, self-involved shopkeepers of the feminist bookstore "Women and Women First."...

Here's a sneak peek of Season 2:

Andy Samberg gets complaints about his terrible love making (Melissa McCarthy on SNL)

Trying to pick up a woman in a bar, a man is confronted by his shortcomings as a lover.

Sketch - Complaints

Melissa McCarthy ... Lana
Vanessa Bayer ... Tracy
Paul Brittain ... bartender
Bill Hader ... guy
Nasim Pedrad ... Kelly
Andy Samberg ... Don
Kenan Thompson ... mailman
Kristen Wiig ... Deb

Hahahaha! So this is an Andy Samberg and Melissa McCarthy sketch (yay!). Andy says he's never gotten any complaints as a lover, and then he gets literally hundreds.

It's great to see that Melissa and Andy had fun playing together a little with the promos and then with this skit.

Do you think Melissa and Andy have good chemistry together?

Great ending! "To our terrible love-making!" Hahahaha.

Andy Samberg's going to be in the Dorritos Superbowl Ad!

Andy Samberg Is Trying To Crash The Super Bowl With Doritos

The Lonely Island...with Doritos
The marketing team behind Doritos is really going for gold this year, by enlisting generic, vaguely funny Everydude Andy Samberg to help with their annual "Crash the Super Bowl" campaign. The campaign is basically a way for Doritos to get publicity without all the hard work of coming up with their own commercials—instead, they get fame-hungry fans to compete against each other with homemade ads. "America" votes for the winner, who will have their ad broadcast during the big game. Last year's winner involved a chip-crazy pug. This year's winner will have to work with Lonely Island. Is that really...a prize?

The shtick this year is that Lonely Island will also be creating an ad for the contest. If their ad wins (by scoring well on the USA Today Ad Meter, which measures the popularity of Super Bowl commercials using SCIENCE), they'll donate $1 million to charity. But if Regular Joe wins, he gets $1 million for himself and the chance to work with the Lonely Island crew, described as "one of the hottest entertainment teams in the industry today." Just look at this topical Lady Gaga spoof they made!

Anyhow, despite the fact that none of the previous contest winners have gone on to much success, Doritos is convinced that this year will be totally awesome. Company reps say the buzz for these things is huge—over 5,000 people entered ads for a recent game played earlier this year. "I would love in two or three years from now for the winner of this year's program be directing or producing major motion picture film, that is true success," said marketing suit Tony Matta. This is truly a marketing stunt that would make newly deceased, chip-encrusted Doritos inventor Arch West proud.

From:
http://gothamist.com/2011/09/27/andy_samberg_is_trying_to_crash_the.php

So there's a cynical approach! Ha!

This guy needs to give Pepsi/Doritos a break. After all, their attempt last year one (with the pug) won for best commercial and the company has a solid history of winning (Pepsi and Doritos): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USA_Today_Super_Bowl_Ad_Meter

Who knows, the ad might be good. Andy was in a Pepsi Super Bowl ad a few years back with Justin Timberlake. The Lonely Island has made a few amusing but not amazing commericals so far, including York Peppermint Patties, MTV Movie Awards, and the vodka one. But Akiva has directed a few fantastic music videos, so hopefully they'll pull out something amazing for this Super Bowl.

Do you think they'll pull it off?

Enjoy!

Andy Samberg & Bill Hader shoot aliens in Stomp - SNL Digital Short

Andy and Bill Hader team up to shoot aliens, and this time there are no cats involved...

A Stomp musical routine breaks out in a police precinct, but is interrupted by alien-like visitors. Aired 10/1/2011 on SNL.

Film SNL Digital Short - Stomp

Fred Armisen ... blue man
Paul Brittain ... blue man
Bill Hader ... police officer
Andy Samberg ... police officer
Jason Sudeikis ... criminal
Kenan Thompson ... criminal

I thought it was enjoyable, but you know everyone's comparing the shorts to the musical digital shorts. So seeing how there was no digital short last week, this is a solid short, and it's good to see Andy being goofy again... but we're all still waiting for the first musical short of the season, and we're sorry to see that Melissa McCarthy and Andy didn't team up for a digital short this week.

Andy was only in three skits this week (digital short, The Essentials show, and Complaints).

It's early to tell for sure, but I'm going to toss in my hat that Melissa McCarthy will get an Emmy nomination for hosting this show. I think she nailed a solid show, showed some great characters, showed some stellar comedy chops, and is coming off an Emmy win this year (2011) for her show, Mike & Molly. What do you think?

I might update this opinion later as I go back and review more of this week's episode.

Enjoy!

Andy Samberg's Mark Zuckerberg impression at the Facebook f8 conference (videos)

Samberg jokes Facebook has "more [members] than the cast of 'Glee'" and that he put "a bullet in the back of [MySpace's] skull."

Impersonating Mark Zuckerberg, Andy Samberg gave the keynote address at the fourth annual Facebook f8 Developer Conference Thursday.

"I'm going to start by focusing on key issues. First: authentic identity. And under this sweatshirt are rock solid, cut and greased abs!" joked Samberg.

"Now let's get to the part where I brag about user growth," he went on, adding that the site was growing so fast "that honestly we just stopped counting you guys. We've got more people than the population of Europe, more people than in the cast of Glee, even more people that claim they came up with Facebook. Burn!"

He then joked about MySpace, saying he put a "bullet in the back of it's skull… kidding, kidding… not kidding."

Charlie Sheen also came up. "We're switching the focus from user growth to user engagement… [like] when Charlie Sheen gets married. Kidding! He abuses drugs a lot…"

Samberg also introduced the "Slow Poke," which takes 24 hours to get to its user, showed off Zuckerberg's new dog, Beast, and flashed a shirtless photo of himself captioned "Zuck Dawg!"

As he was singing about trail mix, the real Zuckerberg game out. "Andy, what the hell are you doing?"

They went back and forth about who was who -- "I'm wearing a hoodie, flip flops -- classic Zuck Dog!" Then Samberg joked, "Sometimes I want to be you Mark. I want to take your face… off."

Samberg also impersonated several other "Bergs," including The Social Network's Jesse Eisenberg and Mark Wahlberg.

Before leaving the stage, Zuckerberg wished Samberg good luck on this weekend's premiere of Saturday Night Live, hosted by Alec Baldwin.

"I'm probably going to phone it in. I used all my good stuff on this," deadpanned Samberg.

Enjoy the video! And be sure to check out SNL tonight!

Well did Andy "phone it in" on SNL last week? Sort of, actually. He just plugged in and didn't really write his own stuff. Give us something great this week, Andy!

Enjoy!
