Or as a centaur:

Or as a rastafarian:

After Halloween, we'll see how many Andy Samberg costumes we could find (but less Junk in a Box ones)!

Should SNL cast members exploit commercials?

There's a lot of history with SNL cast members. Should they be able to exploit other cast members in commercials?

We know that Andy was in a few commercials. He was in Web commercials for York patties and then in Pepsi commercial with Justin Timberlake. Surely nobody minds Andy making a few bucks doing this, having fun with it, and entertaining us.

But what about the recent commercial where David Spade re-appeared in Tommy Boy again, changing his lines to sell DirecTV? Was that exploiting Chris Farley and Tommy Boy?

Check out this article:

If he had to do it again, David Spade wouldn't agree to hawking DIRECTV alongside a scene with his late friend Chris Farley from "Tommy Boy."

"I wouldn't want anyone to get a whiff that I'm trying to get something off Chris," he told People magazine.

The 30-second commercial, which played during the World Series, has been chided by some critics as being tasteless. In it, Farley does his famous "Fat Boy in a Little Coat" routine from the 1995 movie while Spade, inserted into the scene by technology, promotes the satellite service.

...

Spade expressed "slight shock" that anyone would find the ad offensive.

"These commercials are cool," he told People. "They're well done. They're clever. And that they would include "Tommy Boy" in that company, I thought was very flattering."

"Oh, my God if [Farley] was here, I guarantee he'd be stoked that this little movie is included," he said. "The movie is important to me, and I would hate to offend [anyone] because that's one of my favorite things I've ever done. So I would apologize to someone who took it that way."

The commercial series also included scenes from "Back to the Future" and "Aliens."
Read all the critiques here:

============

We all know that David is right. Chris would have done it just to get Tommy Boy on TV again. Chris was pretty laid back about all that stuff.

From 04/14/2008

We covered this like a year ago, but more pics have surfaced. Of course, Andy wasn't as famous then. Starting in Dec 08, Andy took off in popularity due to Ji$$ in My Pants, I'm On a Boat, The Lonely Island's IncrediBad album, Mother Lover, and hosting the MTV Movie Awards.

Here are the pics from the 'Night of Too Many Stars: An Overbooked Benefit for Autism Education' presented by Comedy Central at the Beacon Theatre:

Also pics with Andy and Will Arnett and Andy and Conan O'Brien.

Andy Samberg - Loves this sweatshirt (and Joanna Newsom)

Thanks to Nicole S for the scoop!

Here's are pics taken on Oct 26, so it's recent-tastic. Andy and Joanna are walking in the West Village, NY:

Come on, Andy, she's looking at you! Look at her back! Do it!

Here's an article about this:

Andy Samberg is definitely at the top of his game right now with his whole hilarious hottie thing goin’ on. I’m not sure how long this romance has been in the works, but he was recently spotted strolling in the West Village with girlfriend musician Joanna Newsom. Maybe I am just expecting too much from this SNL Dick in a Box genius, but is anyone else disappointed in his other half??

Andy can pretty much wear whatever he wants since his whole image is about just being the regular funny guy who just happens to be famous and cute. But I am really not liking the leprechaun look that Joanna is sporting. I would cut her some slack and write off this outfit as one picked by an artist who doesn’t care about mainstream fashion, but the Chanel chain bag and over-the-knee boots definitely don’t allow me to do that. I am soooo hating the nautical striped turtleneck babydoll paired with the reversible green wool blanket/coat. And is that just the worst color of Chanel bag ever? I hope it was on sale.

There! That's better! Smile! =^)

And yes, Andy and Joanna are still together! (Coming in for your monthly checkup?) =^)

Andy also wore this same sweatshirt a month ago at this radio interview:

And here's Andy wearing the sweatshirt in this video, Lydia found:

So, in case you were wondering, Andy Samberg does not wear clothing once and then throw it out. He wears stuff at least twice. =^)

Ask ASB - Why is Space Chimps getting a sequel?

Been awhile since we've had another episode of...

Ask Andy Samberg Blog

Why is Space Chimps getting a sequel?

Space Chimps did $30,105,968 domestically.

That's pretty bad when compared to Disney, Pixar, and DreamWorks, who typically get well over $100 million domestically (really depends on the films).

Now Space Chimps cost $37 million to make. So by our normal standards, that's a flop. But that budget is actually super cheap, considering that the big boys spend over $100 million on an animated film. If you keep your costs down, then you don't need as big of a profit to have a "success."

So the first saving grace was that Space Chimps made $34,682,011 in foreign markets, totaling $64,787,979.

That said, not all that goes to the studio (a lot of it goes to the theaters). However, adding DVD sales on top of that, then "Space Chimps" definitely made a healthy profit for the studio.

Plus if they had a sweet script for the sequel, a promise that they can make the effects look better, and point that Andy Samberg is even more popular now than before... then I think they could sell the idea to the studio executives.

================

I think the aliens stuff from the first film was a little too "home video worthy" for a theatrical release, so I hope they have a better script and better alien effects if they venture back out to an alien planet. (Obviously Zartog is back, but he could be invading Earth.)

I think they knew that the alien stuff was the weakness, because it didn't show up in the trailer at all. Just going by the trailer, you actually didn't know that 80% of the movie was on an alien planet.

So I hope they make the script and alien stuff a little more movie-worthy. As for me, I loved the movie, and I thought the actors really did a great job!

Vanguard’s Space Chimps 2 3-D Goes into Production

Los Angeles-based Vanguard Animation is producing a sequel to its 2008 CG-animated feature, Space Chimps. Overseen by animation veteran John Williams (Shrek, Valiant, Happily N’Ever After) the studio is working on the 3-D Space Chimps 2 feature with Fox Home Entertainment, The Animation Picture Company and New Market Capital.

Plans are to release the new feature on DVD in the U.S. in January 2010 and theatrically in select foreign territories in March or April. Mumbai-based Prana Studios is handling the animation. Vanguard presented some of the completed 3-D scenes to buyers at the Cannes Festival this spring. An animated TV series based on the property is also in development.

Andy Samberg - Update about the New York Comedy Festival

New York Comedy Festival: Andy Samberg & Friends
Sunday, Nov 8 8:00p
at The Town Hall, New York, NY
With a diverse range of comedic talents, Andy Samberg has emerged as a captivating and hilarious leading man on screens both big and small. As an Emmy® award winning writer, Samberg is achieving as much success behind the scenes as he is on screen.

Price: $50.00 - $60.00

Samberg recently hosted the 2009 MTV Movie Awards, which was the highest rated Movie Awards since 2004. Samberg’s vocal talents will next be showcased in Chris Miller's animated feature "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs." Sony will release the film on September 18th, 2009. Samberg was also recently nominated for a 2009 Emmy® award for Outstanding Music and Lyrics for his song “Motherlover,” performed alongside Justin Timberlake.

Samberg 's feature film debut was "Hot Rod.' Additionally, he recently starred in the film "I Love You, Man," He voiced the lead character, Ham III, in the animated film "Space Chimps".

Samberg, along with his Lonely Island partners Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, released their first full length album “Incredibad” by Universal Republic Records on February 10th, 2009. “Incredibad” is the first comedy album to reach the #1 spot on iTunes and features favorites such as ““D**k in a Box” and "Natalie's Rap" (featuring actress Natalie Portman and Chris Parnell), as well as new musical creations featuring a diverse arsenal of guest artists including hip hop impresario T-Pain, Grammy® winning superstar Norah Jones, The Strokes' Julian Casablancas, Bay area rapper and The Click founder E-40, and comedy hellion and Tenacious D-veteran Jack Black.

Samberg will start his fifth season as a cast member on “Saturday Night Live" this fall. His breakthrough performance for the veteran comedy showcase was the music video "Lazy Sunday," a performance collaboration with SNL alum Chris Parnell. “Lazy Sunday” was an undeniable online phenomenon that amassed over five million hits on YouTube.com within a few days and sparked its own legion of Internet imitations. The controversy surrounding the legal ramifications of online video content thrust the story into the media spotlight, highlighting Samberg as the poster-child for a new generation of DIY filmmakers and comics.

The following season, Samberg, Schaffer and Taccone again made waves with the short video "D**k in a Box," starring Samberg and Justin Timberlake in a spoof on early-nineties R&B. As of April 2007, “D**k In a Box” was the all-time # 4 video on YouTube.com with over 20 million views. The song reached unprecedented levels of popularity both online and in print, culminating in Samberg joining Timberlake on-stage at Madison Square Garden in February 2007 and performing the song live for more than 18,000 fans. The classic R&B spoof won a 2007 Emmy® award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.

Samberg, Schaffer and Taccone, collectively known as “The Lonely Island,” have been friends since junior high school in Berkeley, CA. In 2000, the trio began writing, directing, and producing their own brand of comedy and showcasing it on their website www.thelonelyisland.com.

PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT THE LONELY ISLAND WILL NOT BE PERFORMING IN THIS EVENT

Mark writes the Taylor Swift monologue

So Mark takes a stab at writing the Taylor Swift monologue, concentrating on making fun of the Kanye West ordeal. I don't think he's far off. We've already talked about it here, and our ideas were very similar to this.

Read how close our comments were to this (very close):

http://andysamberg.blogspot.com/2009/10/taylor-swift-is-hosting-saturday-night.html#comments

Check out Mark's thoughts...

The most common joke in pop culture for the past few years revolves around "Saturday Night Live" not being funny anymore.

That's not true. There has been plenty to laugh at.

Although, this season hasn't exactly gotten off to rib-tickling start. A few good skits here and there, and solid "Weekend Update" performances, but as a whole, well, I haven't kept any episodes stored on the DVR.

However, I'm thinking that will change Nov. 7 when Taylor Swift hosts "Saturday Night Live." That has the potential for terrific work. The "SNL" writers won't have to work too hard to find comedic content for Swift.

They could just write a Kanye West interruption into every skit. That would be hilarious. Well, maybe not every skit but certainly three or four "I'mma let you finish" bits would make us laugh.

No way Swift makes it more than three sentences in her opening monologue before she gets Kanye'd. In fact, that should be her whole monologue. Heck, let's write it right now:

"Thank you, thank you, thank you so much. I'm Taylor Swift and I'm sooooooo excited to be hosting 'Saturday Night Live.'"

Cue Alec Baldwin.

"Taylor, I'm really happy you're hosting 'Saturday Night Live' this week, and I'mma let you finish, but I'm the best host of the all time. The best host of all time!"

Cue Andy Samberg.

"Yeah, Taylor, I'm really happy for your T-Swizzle/T-Pain spoof at the CMT Awards, and I'mma let you finish, but I made one of the best digital shorts of all time! One of the best digital shorts of all time!"

Back to Swift.

"Anyway, Andy, last year I was a musical guest on the show and that was awesome. This year, I get to h . . . "

Cue Kenan Thompson.

"I'm really happy for your career success, and I'mma let you finish, Taylor, but my duet with Anna Faris was the best singing of last season! The best singing of last season!"

Back to Swift.

"Ummmm, Ooooookay, Kenan. So, last time I was in New York, I had a great time performing on top of a taxicab at Radio City. How many people my age can do that without getting arres . . . "

Cue to Kristen Wiig.

"Taylor, I'm really happy you're so young and successful, and I'mma let you finish, but I've been dancing on top of cabs for years and I'm the best of all time! The best of all time!"

Back to Swift.

"OK, Kristen. But have you ever won a VMA? I did. Of course, my chance to accept the VMA wasn't what I had planned, but . . . "

Cue Kanye West.

"Taylor, I'm really happy for you and I'mma let you finish, but I was one of the biggest jerks of all time that night! One of the biggest jerks of all time! So, seriously this time, I'mma let you finish."

That would be a win-win for everyone involved, including us consumers of pop culture.

From:
http://www.newsday.com/entertainment/pet-rock-a-pop-culture-blog-1.811972/taylor-swift-snl-and-the-potential-for-great-comedy-1.1526430

=====================

I saw some similarities here to our conversation:

http://andysamberg.blogspot.com/2009/10/taylor-swift-is-hosting-saturday-night.html#comments

We were thinking the same opening interruption, and we also mentioned Alec Baldwin doing it. But we think Steve Martin could do it even better. Similar to how Steve Martin interrupted Tina Fey's monologue.

I like Mark's Andy Samberg line, but I think it could be even better if it was specific to just T-Payne, making fun of the fact that Andy and Taylor both tapped T-Payne to do mock raps. It's almost like a "T-Payne short" is a genre now. =^)

Andy Samberg:

"Yeah, Taylor, I'm really happy for your T-Pain video at the CMT Awards, and I'mma let you finish, but I made one of the best T-Payne digital shorts of all time! One of the best T-Payne shorts of all time!"

And maybe when Kristen Wiig gives her response, they can show a clip of her dancing on cabs and peoples' reactions around her. That would be pretty funny!

Enjoy!
