Overall: Not much Andy this week either. At least he was in the actual show, though, but one of the sketches isn't online. =^)

That's 4 appearances total for Andy, but one was a commercial and one the digital short. I'm glad we got two musical digital shorts in a row, but neither one was as good as "On the Ground," which makes "On the Ground" the biggest hit digital short of the season (so far). Will and Jason think of the craziest skits and characters together. Well, everything Will does is crazy. This one is particularly memorable (and more entertaining than most). It deserves some sort of sequel, especially of Jason's character.


Bottom line: I loved Kenan and Abby on WU. Other than that, it seemed like there were a bunch of situations, but not many jokes.

The Monologue was amusing and enjoyable, but not funny. I was glad to see Andy's Swedish Chef back though.

I didn't like the Cold Opening. It just seems like they can't make Obama funny, so they put him in situations around crazy people to make that funny. They need to find a new Obama.

So I think Bill Cosby, Brittany Murphy, the digital short, and Andy's Keanu Reeves (no video of that one) were lights in a dark episode.

You'll also notice that SNL hasn't been concentrating on original characters (they're most just concentrating on impressions, trying things out, and Kristen Wiig characters).

Back when Mike Meyers or Will Ferrell were on, you got two or three hilarious skits featuring your favorite repeat characters. Now it's pretty much just Kristen Wiig brining out her characters or the cast occasionally bringing back "okay" characters that aren't hilarious (just weird).

Overall:

Andy Samberg has three appearances here. All are funny. His clown dance is a great addition to a hilariously strange sketch, I'm glad to see the Mellow Show back (and a great use of Dave Matthews), and the Kenan/Andy song is funny and twisted. It won't ever be a classic, but it's buying some time until the next classic.

Wow. I can't help but feel that Kenan is fighting back to the author of that "10 ways to improve SNL" article. This is cute, funny, and gross, all at the same time. We're relieved! Andy Samberg was in full swing this week with a record-breaking 8 skits! Bill Hader was in record-breaking 9 skits! Taylor was also in all 9 and 11 total. There were more skits than usual because they were all shorter.

I wish Taylor and Andy collabed on a song, but we still have hope. He can just call her over and do it anytime. She doesn't have to be hosting. (T-Payne in I'm On a Boat, Justin Timberlake appearing in Ji** In My Pants, and Adam Levine in Iran So Far are examples of that.)

TISHA: I was expecting this season of SNL for them to make fun of the whole ''Jon & Kate'' crap, but was not expecting Taylor as Kate! I agree she was quite stiff and strange as the part, maybe nervous. TAE: This is an amusing Twilight parody. Andy plays the cool guy at the beginning (looks like a vampire). And then later on he also plays a mummy. Glad he got in the digital short this week. Interestingly, Andy also made fun of Twilight appearing in it during the MTV Movie Awards opening. Taylor Swift also appeared in that short, where she asked Andy out to a dance. So here we are again with another Twilight parody! I'm sad that he didn't do a music video with Taylor, but they can always do it some other time. She doesn't have to be the host (examples: Iran So Far and I'm On a Boat).

TISHA: I was hoping for a song and what not, but your'e right TAE, Taylor does not have to host for her to appear with Andy and do a song with him. But this was pretty great! Loved Tay in it, she was really good in it, Bill was hysterical, look great as Frakenstein, love him. Way to make fun of the overrated 'Twilight'! Although I did want her to do something predominantly with Andy, the parts he was in, especially in the beginning, he looked hott as hell as an Edward/Vampire look-a-like. I was wondering if Andy was the mummy and was correct!

TAE: I think this is their third one of these Kenan skits. Again, a poor skit for Taylor. She feels very awkward, nervous, and out of place here.

TISHA: ''Scared Straight'' is my favorite Kenan skit and one of my favorite recurring skit period with Andy, Bill, Jason, and sometimes Bobby. I agree it was really awkward for Taylor being in it (she did her best though) and for the skit appearing, neverless it was hysterical, love the reference to ''Back to the Future'' and 'Sound of Music''. The part with Kenan and Tay playing with Bill's face was hilarious, both Tay and Bill broke character a little (especially Bill, not the first time for him, he did it in one of the other previous 'Scared Straights'), then at the end Jason, Andy, Bill, and Bobby all together (Bobby stumbled on his line), I love the fact they had a good time, and were laughing (made it even funnier).. ''1.21 Jizzowats!''

It's cool that Nadim got this skit. Needed a better ending though. Andy should have left and then they could have made out. Or Andy could have gone postal. Or Andy should have thrown Anna (Taylor) out the window or something. =^)

TISHA: ''Roomies'' wasn't very funny to me, although when Nasim was tugging Tay, it was pretty ridiculous, loved Andy, his hair is short and he just looks amazingly hott as he always is. Agree happy to see Nasim have a lead role in a sketch for once, but yeah it really needed a strong ending, that was the weak point. TAE thats a funny idea you have there, if he throwed her the window or anything similar to that it would have made the skit to be funnier than what it was. Maybe SNL needs to hire you! :)

TAE: Taylor's Shakira was amazing! I was also impressed with Kristen's Natalie Merchant, but they were all very funny!

TISHA: ''Bunny Business'' was absolutely hysterical! Taylor was amazing as Shakira (she really did sounded like her)! ''Bunny girls hop on Bunny boys...Eeeeaaahhh....Aaaaauuoooo''.. Andy was hilarious as the lead singer from the Counting Crows and Kenan as Jennifer Hudson was just so ridiculously funny. ''And you and you and you, your gonna pay meeee for this soundtrack......Your gonna pay meeeee....MONEY!!! Kristen was funny too as well as Fred, Abby and Bill (his facial expression was hilarious).


SUMMARY:

I think Taylor did alright. Scared Straight was mostly just funny to watch the actors try to make each other crack. Taylor was too awkward there. And she was a little stiff in The View. Plus she flubbed at the beginning of the Monologue. Other than that, I thought she did a great job. I think she really did a great job on firelight, Shakira, the teenager with braces, Penelope, and the monologue song.

And Roomies was also good, but the ending wasn't strong enough.

I still want Taylor to do a song with Andy!

Here's the deal. I'm not sure if Andy was up to something else (preparing for an album, preparing for the Taylor Swift episode, or maybe just taking a break?)... but Andy had two full episodes in a row, and we know he's going to be a big hitter in the coming Taylor Swift episode. So we can understand if they wanted to devote this episode to showing off some hilariously manly skits... including:

- The Rock Obama (he's back)

- Ninjas and Warriors (the monologue)

- Beauty and the Beast

- 2 gay military guys

- 300 (I knew they'd do it)

- Daveheart


So kudos for them finally doing some hilariously manly skits (and squishing them all in one episode like that). I'm not sure how that happened, but maybe Gerard just pointed to all the manly action skits and said, "I like those." Maybe something like that.

Just as an example of how "manly" this episode was, Bobby Moynihan was in five sketches. In three of them, he was "a warrior." And in one he was Cogsworth. (Then he also did a voice.)

I'm notoriously not a fan of Kenan's humor, and these gags are no exception. (That said, Kenan's Deep House Dish in this episode was an exception, but mostly due to Andy Samberg, Madonna, and Lady Gaga.)

This was pretty funny. This is the closest SNL has gotten to actually making fun of Obama. It was Obama telling people they're wrong (that he's not a socialist), but at least he's admitting that he hasn't truly done anything. Good point. If he actually made good on a few of his specific goals/promises... then he'd be a socialist. Until that happens, the right wing has no reason to say he is a socialist (and the communist and nazi comparisons are just ridiculous).

Fred is also changing his impression here. He's playing Obama as a lot more relaxed and "normal" than usual. Probably a good thing.



Ryan Reynolds Monologue

Action movies and romantic comedies have a lot in common.

Ryan was able to hold our interest in a monologue without a song and without any cast members. Kudos to Ryan. He was hilarious, and he did a good job reminding us that he was burning up the romantic comedy scene and the super hero scene. In addition to Green Lantern, he also has a Deadpool movie coming (one from Marvel and one from DC). Of course, he's already done Blade 3 (Marvel). So far, he's got 2 super hero movies under his belt (Blade 3 and Wolverine) with 2 more coming (Deadpool and Green Lantern). And if Wolverine or Green Lantern get sequels, then he's got even more coming. Go Ryan go!

Musically, the song sounds like "Like a Boss." However, this is an original piece that is unique and hilarious. They are constantly taking you in a new direction with the same "ground" gag. This is also a great use of Ryan Reynolds (and Elijah Wood) to get him involved in a digital short song in a humorous way. Elijah's expression when they're tasing Andy is HILARIOUS!!!

Also, Bryan Tucker (an SNL writer) appears as the hot dog man. Bryan is known for playing Roy in "Roy Rules." Good to see Jenny Slate in an SNL Digital Short (she knows what's up), and Bobby Moynihan also has a strong role (as the energy drink guy).

Closing Thoughts: This is an Andy-tastic episode! While I don't think "On the Ground" will be as successful as Ji## In My Pants, I'm On a Boat, or Mother Lover from last season, it is definitely better than any of the other shorts from last season and certainly a classic in its own right.

SNL puts the main digital short back in the first half (and Ryan C rejoices).

Andy was in 6 sketches tonight, tying first place with Kristen Wiig and Fred Armisen.

Overall, this was not a good night for Jenny Slate and Will Forte.

I would say the same about Abby Elliott, but as Marie Osmond and Nancy Grace, she had a memorable evening.

Likewise, Bobby Moynihan had a solid performance in the digital short and a stellar Nathan Lane. So for only two sketches, he made them count.

Nasim Pedrad did a great job as Mrs. Ahmadinejad and filled in some needed roles.

Kristen Wiig appeared a lot, but all her appearances were supporting roles for the other cast memebers. This proves that she is truly a team player, which is important after headlining four skits last week. Kristen's Whip It is open now! Go see it!
