Andy Samberg Blog is BACK!

WOW! This blog is WAY overdue for an update. Since The Animation Empire is leaving this blog, I (SamJae) have volunteered to post every so often, if not every day (I will try my best). In the meantime, here's finally some Andy news! :D

Andy Samberg has had a crazy time in the last month! To start with, his movie "Celeste and Jesse Forever" premiered at Sundance last month. For anyone who has not heard about it, "Celeste and Jesse Forever" is a romantic comedy/drama starring Andy and Rashida Jones. With Andy playing Jesse and Rashida as Celeste, the movie is said to be about a couple who met in high school, married soon afterwards, but decided to get a divorce while trying to remain friends. Of all the reviews about the premier I've read, this movie is bound to move many of the audience to tears. As Rashida said in an interview, the movie is about "how to really break up with someone", so it's not the old school romantic dramedy most people are used to, which is a relief! Anyway, here are some links to videos of Andy during the Sundance Film Festival:

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2012/01/andy-samberg-gets-silly-at-sundance/

And a review:

http://www.wired.com/underwire/2012/01/celeste-and-jesse-forever/

Moving on, Andy worked on yet another movie that first premiered a few months ago (he had a crazy movie-filming summer). In this one, he co-stars with *GASP* Adam Sandler, who is one of Andy's all-time biggest heroes! The movie's title, which had previously been changed 3 times before being settled on, is "That's My Boy", and the official release date is in June. Andy plays the Adam Sandler's character (Donny)'s son, Han Solo Burger.... Yeah. In the movie, Andy's dad had fathered him when he was still in middle school, and the mother was his teacher (played by Susan Sarandon, who coincidentally played Andy's mother in the "Motherlover" and "3-way" digital shorts alongside Justin Timberlake, remember??). Adam Sandler's character can't take care of his kid since he himself was just a kid, so Han Solo Burger was taken into foster care. The movie flashes forward 25 or so years later to when Andy's character has become successful in whatever he ended up doing, he is rich, and is getting ready to marry is fiance, played by Leighton Meester. Donny, having lived the rest of his life barely getting by, finds out his long-lost son is rich, and shows up right before the wedding in search of money. That's about all I know about this film!

Anyway, Andy and Adam Sandler showed up on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Sunday after the Superbowl to talk about the movie. There are three parts to the interview, two being on the first link, and the last on the second (enjoy!):

Aaaaand last but not least for today's post, there has been some last-minute change up about yet another Andy movie, "Hotel Transylvania". This is an animated film that is currently being worked on, and also stars Adam Sandler, if you can believe it. For the last few months, the creators were talking about how Miley Cyrus will be playing the part of Andy's love interest in the film, but it seems something else is up their sleeves now: Selena Gomez has replaced Miley! Not much of a difference, considering both are WAY too young to play Andy's love interest in a non-animated film, they have both been Disney Chanel stars, and everyone in the world either REALLY hates them, or REALLY loves them. Personally, they don't concern me too much, but if either one is going to be in a movie with Andy, all I care about is that the bring their A-game!

Here's the link to the review of Selena Gomez:

http://www.eonline.com/news/marc_malkin/selena_gomez_replaces_miley_cyrus_in/293049

That's it for today. A long, boring post, I know, but since TAE left without warning and all for a whole month, it was kinda necessary. I will try my best to post as often as possible, but until then, please enjoy the fact that the Andy Samberg Blog is NOT dying!!

Andy Samberg - More photos filming I Hate You Dad

UPDATE: Reposting because we learned that Adam Sandler is actually in one of these photos below. Originally posted on 6/18/11

I don't recognize any of the crew here:

This is actually Adam Sandler on the left in the blue coat, red shirt, and wig (he wears a wig for his character, like he did in Zohan):

Oh, yeah, I can see what you mean about platform shoes. They definitely gave Andy shoes a lift so he's a bit taller.

From "I Hate You Dad" to "Donny's Boy"

I think "Donny's Boy" sounds a little like their previous production, "Grandma's Boy," which flopped because it starred Allen Covert (it was funny though). However, most people don't even know that film exists...

==================================

Sandler movie gets a new name

“I Hate You, Dad,” the Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg comedy that’s filming in Osterville, has a new name: “Donny’s Boy.” We got word about the title change today, and we have to admit, “Donny’s Boy” is a bit catchier (and certainly less confrontational) than “I Hate You, Dad.” We assume that the new title means that Sandler’s character will be named Donny. The New Hampshire-bred actor is set to play Samberg’s grouchy father in the film, which co-stars Leighton Meester, Vanilla Ice, and Susan Sarandon. This isn’t the first Boston movie that’s had a big name change. “Knight & Day,” the blockbuster starring Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise, was called “Wichita” and “Trouble Man” before director James Mangold settled on its final title.

The Chemistry between Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg

Tony Orlando talks about the chemistry between Andy Samberg and Adam Sandler:

While promoting his partnership with The Franklin Mint, Tony Orlando chats with Access Hollywood about why it's a "challenge" to work with Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg in their new movie, "I Hate You, Dad."

A Skeptic's View of 'I Hate You Dad'

Once upon a time, I really liked Adam Sandler. Back in the 90's films like The Waterboy and Happy Gilmore had me cracking up. Maybe because I was still in high school, but he was still entertaining. Even moves like Punch Drunk Love proved he could be versatile on screen. But now... not so much. I find it more and more painful to sit through his movies, and he just continues to crank them out.

His latest film announcement is for I Hate You Dad, where the SNL alum teams up with current SNL cast member Andy Samberg. And while Andy is pretty damn entertaining, I'm not optimistic that he could save a Sandler-starring film. And the premise doesn't help much:

"The story centers on a father (Sandler) who moves in on the eve of his son’s (Samberg) wedding and promptly begins feuding with the bride-to-be.”

Yeah, sounds mediocre at best. At least it doesn't have Sandler playing a rich successful guy again. Or does it? I'm sure he'd find a way to make that happen. Also, there's only two years seperating the two stars, so unless Sandler's character got started on having kids REALLY young, they may have to use some creative age makeup on Sandler. Or make Samberg somehow look younger.

From:
http://www.getthebigpicture.net/blog/2011/1/16/adam-sandlers-latest-film-i-hate-you-dad.html
==================

The author, Josh, said the "2" is a typo, and he meant "12". They aren't exactly the 20 years apart (take or lose 4 years) that it would take for Adam to be Andy's dad, but the 12 years makes it doable with makeup on both of them.

Do you agree with Josh? Do you like Sandler films? Do you think this will be any better than Sandler's other recent films?

Sandler's biggest recent hits were The Longest Yard and Grown Up, which, yes, both had him playing a successful, rich dude (as well as did Funny People, Mr. Deeds, Billy Madison, and even 50 First Kisses). But let's face it, he is a successful rich dude, so he's pretty much playing himself. =^)

Bacon and Legs - Causing a Stir

So apparently the Bacon and Legs bar/restaurant for the new Andy Samberg / Adam Sandler comedy has upset the local folks. Here is more...

PEABODY, Mass. -- Classy Rick's Bacon and Leggs may not be the place you'd bring your kids for Sunday brunch - then again, it's not a real restaurant.

Route 1's Cabaret Lounge has been transformed into the breakfast joint for the new Adam Sandler movie, "I Hate You Dad," which is filming in Peabody, and the racy signage is turning some heads.

“I’d probably keep driving and not think twice about it as a guy. If my wife was with me, we might have a discussion about it and both decide that it was inappropriate,” said John Mitchell.

Movie crews have a permit to film at the adult club and for the sign, but city leaders said some people offended by the set's naked woman - with the suggestively placed eggs and bacon - wanted a petition to remove it. Then there are those in town who would actually like it to become a permanent fixture.

“I think it's pretty cool, to be honest with you. it's something different. there's all kind of trucks, a little excitement up here. You know what I mean?” said Paul Ambrosino.

“I think people need to relax. It’s a movie, it's not like they're jumping out there and grabbing people off of Route 1,” said Rob.

“I’m just excited Adam Sandler is here, doing a movie here, and its right down the street from where we work. It's exciting,” said Dave Andrews.

City hall has field some phone calls from concerned people about the restaurant, but once they find out it's for the movie, everyone seems to be just fine. The mayor said he was out on the set and the crew has been very professional and that the set is coming down Saturday morning.

Ken Yuszkus/Gloucester Daily Times The Cabaret Lounge on Route 1A is temporarily sportting a new sign and new name. It has been transformed into the club “Classy Rick’s Bacon and Leggs,” for a movie starring Adam Sandler.

"Classy Rick's Bacon & Leggs," aka the Cabaret Lounge on Route 1, has had a bit of a makeover recently as the crew from the big-budget flick "I Hate You, Dad," starring Adam Sandler, is now in its second week filming at the adult club.

As part of the shoot, the crew erected a big, cartoonish sign of a busty, nude woman with a plate of eggs and bacon covering her chest. The lady out front even has a lit-up leg that moves up and down. The sign is expected to come down by next week.

Still, the city has received about a dozen complaints about the new sign from passers-by stunned that it could allow such a gross monstrosity. One woman even planned a petition to get the sign taken down, according to city officials.

"For the most part, once we explain that Columbia Pictures is shooting a movie there they understood and calmed down," said Mary Bellavance, the mayor's administrative assistant.

The movie had to get a permit to film at the club and for the sign.

"I'm not offended by it, more amused," Mayor Michael Bonfanti said. "It's a temporary thing. It will be there a week and a half, and then it goes away."

"But it is generating a lot of interesting comments," Bellavance said.

Bonfanti got a personal tour of the set earlier in the week when he popped in for about 45 minutes to check on the progress.

"They showed us the equipment and the trailers. There's a lot more to a movie than just the acting. There's a lot of logistics and coordination," he said. "It's like going to war. For every combat person, there are 15 people behind them."

According to various Internet reports, "I Hate You, Dad" is directed by Sean Anders and John Morris and stars Sandler, Andy Samberg from "Saturday Night Live," Susan Sarandon, Leighton Meester, Vanilla Ice, New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan and others. The movie is about a grumpy father (Sandler) who moves in with his son (Samberg) and his son's fiancee (Meester) just before they're about to get married. The dad and fiancee don't get along, and drama ensues.

The crew was at a Collins Street apartment complex two weeks ago shooting scenes for the movie, which is slated for release next summer. At least 100 people were camped out in front of the building hoping to catch a glimpse of a star. The situation is similar on Route 1, but, because of the heavy traffic, police aren't allowing people to stop or get too close to the production. It still has created some traffic issues at times, however.

"People want to see it. They hear a movie is filming there," Bellevance said.

Is "I Hate You Dad" Rated R?

“SNL” alums Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Will Forte and Colin Quinn have yukked it up on the closed set of “I Hate You, Dad” at the Cabaret Lounge in Peabody this week, where production peeps kept a close eye for interlopers hoping to catch Sandler or Samberg getting a lap dance!

“Security has been tight on this shoot,” said one of our set spies. “It’s an R-rated movie.”

Oh, really? Was “Rick’s Bacon & Leggs” — the lounge’s name in the flick — the first clue?

But we hear even some men need a little time away from the stripper pole. Do call us dubious.

Sandler takes breaks from the faux bachelor party action by shooting hoops next door at Latitude, the sports club where his BFF Kevin James filmed “Here Comes the Boom.” Stuffing $20 bills in G-strings can be soooo monotonous!

After the boys leave the “Bacon & Leggs” behind, the production moves to the Cape, where the cast is expected to film at concession king Joe O’Donnell’s haute house in Harwich and other seaside spots for three weeks

For this pic, it's like they took the best shot of Leighton and worst shot of Sandler and put them together:

Most Sandler flicks are not Rated R, but R Rated comedies have been making a come back, thanks to Hangover, Due Date, Hangover 2, and Bridesmaids.

I Hate You Dad - set visit at Cabaret Lounge

Life is a Cabaret, old chum!

“I Hate You, Dad,” the father-son comedy starring Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg, began filming at the Cabaret Lounge in Peabody yesterday — or as it’s called in the flick, “Classy Rick’s Bacon & Leggs!”

According to our spies on the set, lots of real-life strippers, bearing their own, um, wardrobe and stilettos, showed up for their close-ups at noon. But it seems the gals weren’t skanky enough for the bachelor party scene, so make-up artists spent hours adding tattoos and blemishes to their bods. Hard to imagine, isn’t it?

Film crew members work on the set of ‘I Hate You, Dad’ at the Cabaret Lounge, which was renamed ‘Classy Rick’s Bacon and Leggs':

While Sandler, Samberg, Vanilla Ice, Todd Bridges, Ciara, and, yes, NY Jets coach Rex Ryan were on hand for the "Bacon & Leggs" shoot, the star of the day appeared to be an actress named Luenell, a full-figured gal, who, we hear, has practiced working the pole for a month!

“TODAY IZ DA DAY Tweeps! On my way 2 the set of this epic, game changing comedy,” Luenell tweeted early yesterday. “It’s all about my scenes 4 the next 3 or 4 days. GOD b w/me!”

Spotlight on "I Hate You Dad" directors - Sean Anders & John Morris

Sean Anders and John Morris come from screen writing background mostly. They wrote:
- Mr. Popper's Penguins (Jim Carrey)
- Hot Tub Time Machine (John Cusack)
- She's Out of My League (Jay Baruchel)
- Sex Drive (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1135985/)

Sean previously directed Never Been Thawed (his indie debut) and Sex Drive.

Adam Sandler usually uses his regular cast of directors for his films (friends from college and SNL days; even Judd Apatow fits in that category), but they likely enjoyed Sean's previously films and wanted to give him a shot directing one of their comedies.

Samberg / Sandler comedy films wedding at church

Adam Sandler comedy filming at church in Brookline

[The church was established in 1717:]

A crew filming a new movie called “I Hate You Dad” starring Adam Sandler is in Brookline today in and around First Parish church on Walnut Street.

The Columbia Pictures production is filming a wedding scene at the church at 382 Walnut Street, just south of Boylston Street/Route 9, and was in town from Tuesday, 6/21 through Wednesday, 6/22, said Brookline Police Lt. Phil Harrington.

The Unitarian Universalist church has been rented out for the comedy and Harrington said Sandler and actor James Caan were at the church Monday for filming.

Leighton Meester of “Gossip Girl” is also in town for the movie, which also stars Andy Samberg and Susan Sarandon.

Leighton Meester photos - filming I Hate You Dad (Andy Samberg & Adam Sandler flick)

Leighton Meester: 'I Hate You, Dad' in Boston!

Leighton Meester grabs a snack while on break from filming I Hate You, Dad on Monday (June 20) in Boston, Mass.

The 25-year-old actress stars in the comedy along with Adam Sandler, Milo Ventimiglia, and Andy Samberg.

[Leighton began filming I Hate You Dad on Father's Day, and she thought that was ironic...]

“Happy Fathers Day!! Ironically, I start shooting I Hate You Dad tomorrow #IHYD haha,” Leighton tweeted the day before.

Leighton, who performed in West Hollywood last week, recently told Parade.com she’s hoping to release an album “very soon - hopefully before the end of the year.”

“In the meantime, I want people to get a glimpse of what I’m doing. I love live music and I love to see people’s faces when I’m performing,” she added.

In what was her first day of filming on the Adam Sandler-fronted project, the "Gossip Girl" actress grabbed a quick snack of Tostitos and salsa during a break between takes.

Directed by Sean Anders and John Morris, "I Hate You, Dad" is about "a disagreeable father who moves in with his son before he's about to get married."

Due in theaters on June 15, 2012, the comedy also features Will Forte, Susan Sarandon, Milo Ventimiglia and James Caan.

Andy Samberg and Vanilla Ice - I Hate You Dad

Vanilla Ice In 'I Hate You Dad,' New Adam Sandler Comedy

Could Vanilla Ice finally be delivering his long-awaited second hit?

The onetime rap star is out of the music business, but after a rocky two decades, has landed a major film role. Variety reports that Vanilla Ice, real name: Robert Van Winkle, has been cast in the upcoming Adam Sandler film, "I Hate You Dad."

Ice will play a longtime friend of Sandler, who, in turn, will play Andy Samberg's dad. In the film, Sandler moves in with Samberg and his new fiancee, whom Sandler immediately begins to feud with.

Variety also reports that Leighton Meester, last seen on the big screen in this winter's "The Roommate," and before that, "Country Strong," is in talks for the role of Samberg's bride to be.

For the past two decades, Vanilla Ice has released a number of poorly received albums, jumping between hip hop, rock and grunge to create a unique, if not highly popular, style. He's continued to tour, but drug problems and some outlandish behavior have taken their toll on his reputation.

In 2008, he was arrested for assaulting his wife, though she later said he only pushed her; as part of a 2009 marketing campaign for a mobile phone company, he "apologized" to the world for his career.

It was recently announced that he'll play Captain Hook in a pantomime performance of "Peter Pan" in England.

From:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/02/vanilla-ice-in-i-hate-you-dad_n_843964.html

So Ice plays Sandler's friend. Surprised Rob Schneider's not in that role. I love to watch Sandler movies to see how Rob's going to pop up, because he's such a chameleon.

From the previous article, we know that Ice is playing himself, which makes his character more interesting, I think.

Are you interested in seeing Vanilla Ice in the film?

On a slightly-but-not-really-related note, we made this silly Lego-style 3D animation about Vanilla Ice:

Leighton Meester - Andy Samberg's love interest in I Hate You Dad

So Adam Sandler's getting old enough where he has played a man trying to get back with his ex (Funny People) and a man who is already married (Grown Ups). Now he plays the father, and Andy Samberg gets to play the young man with the love interest. And Andy's love interest is Leighton Meester.

Leighton Marissa Meester (born April 9, 1986) is an American actress and singer. Meester gained fame for playing the role of Blair Waldorf in the CW young-adult television series Gossip Girl. She most recently appeared in the 2010 country drama film Country Strong and the 2011 thriller The Roommate.

After her television debut in 1999 playing Alyssa Turner in Law & Order, Meester appeared as a guest in two more series before landing her big role in the movie Hangman's Curse, based on the best-selling book by Frank Peretti. Meester also appeared in Tarzan, which ran for only eight episodes. Meester started to land guest roles in other series such as Crossing Jordan, 8 Simple Rules, 7th Heaven, Veronica Mars, 24, and Entourage.

In 2005, Meester began a regular role in the series Surface as Savannah Bennet. Meester appeared in two more 2006 movies, Flourish and Inside. She also guest appeared in Numb3rs and in three episodes of House M.D. as Ali, a young girl who has a crush on House.

After that guest roles on CSI: Miami, Shark, and playing the female lead in the horror film Drive-Thru.

In 2007, Meester was cast in the CW's teen drama series Gossip Girl as Blair Waldorf. The show is based on the book series by Cecily von Ziegesar about the lives of New York's privileged Upper East Side young adults. Her performance is the most critically acclaimed of the show, with Blair being cited as the series' breakout character, and also garnering much media recognition due to her wardrobe.

In 2007, Meester appeared on the television film The Haunting of Sorority Row, and played a part in the ensemble comedy/drama Remember the Daze. She also appeared in the horror/thriller film Killer Movie in 2008.

Meester had a small role in the 2010 comedies Date Night and Going The Distance. She starred in Screen Gems' 2010 country drama Country Strong, and 2011 thriller The Roommate. She will star in The Uncatchable Cowgirl Bandits of Nottingham, Texas alongside Amber Heard; in the indie dramatic comedy The Oranges opposite Hugh Laurie; and will star next to Selena Gomez and Katie Cassidy in the young femme comedy Monte Carlo, loosely based on Jules Bass's young-adult book Headhunters.

Info from Wikipedia.

So do you think she's a worthy on-screen love interest for Andy Samberg?

Susan Sarandon joins Andy Samberg in I Hate You Dad

'I Hate You Dad': Susan Sarandon In Talks For Adam Sandler Comedy

Sarandon has indeed signed on for the part, and her daughter, Eva Amurri, will also appear in the movie. James Caan has been added to the cast, as well.

Making a film that requires a cougar sleeping with a younger man? There's only one true name to call.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Susan Sarandon is set to join the Adam Sandler/Andy Samberg comedy, "I Hate You Dad." The film, about dad Sandler moving into son Samberg's home and starting a rivalry with his fiancee, already has an eclectic cast: Leighton Meester will play the bride-to-be, while Ian Ziering and Vanilla Ice will play significant roles -- as themselves. Ice will be, in the film, a long time friend of Sandler's character.

As for Sarandon, she'd play a sexy teacher with a significant connection to Samberg and Sandler. Vanilla Ice told the Huffington Post that Sarandon's character slept with Sandler's character when he was 13 years old, with Samberg as the embarrassed progeny.

James Caan, Will Forte and Milo Ventimiglia are in talks to join the cast --

Sarandon, of course, played a sexy older woman in "Bull Durham," starting her trend of taking on that role. Perhaps it's art imitating life; Sarandon is rumored to be dating much younger business partner Jonathan Bricklin.

She's had a busy past few years; by the end of 2011, she'll have been in 18 movies since 2006. She'll soon star in the big screen adaptation of "Cloud Atlas," as well as take on a supporting role in "Gently Down The Stream," another film about young lovers and their obnoxious parents. She's also due to top line the drama "Hemlock Drive" alongside Adam Brody and David Arquette.

Click here for more on Susan Sarandon:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/06/01/i-hate-you-dad-susan-sarandon_n_869905.html
==========

From this article we get confirmation that Will Forte is in the film (since we already saw him on set), and we see that Vanilla Ice and Ian Ziering will be playing themselves. It's kind of cool that Vanilla Ice will play himself and be a major character. That doesn't happen very often (Being John Malkovich is the only one I can think of right now).

Of course, Susan Sarandon has also appeared in two Andy Samberg shorts... Mother Lover in a major role and Golden Rule (Three Way) as a cameo.

Enjoy!

Salma Hayek visits I Hate You Dad

Salma Hayek: 'I Hate You Dad' Set Visit

Salma Hayek visits the set of the film I Hate You Dad on Wednesday (June 8, 2011) in Boston, Mass.

The 44-year-old Mexican actress took the trip to visit her pal Adam Sandler. The pair starred together in 2010 film Grown Ups.

Salma recently signed on to star the new movie Savages!

Is that her bodyguard?
