...What did I like best about this movie? It could have been the cast: Besides vocal chameleon Hader we have James Caan, Anna Farris, Neil Patrick Harris, Andy Samberg, Bruce Campbell and even Mr T! It could have been the 3D: Whatever the new technology Sony was using was, it did a great job of creating depth without the kind of stuttering I saw in other 3D movies like Coraline. Or it could have been that the writers did a great job of writing jokes for both the kids and the grown-ups in the audience (be they visual, referential or narrative in nature) while never taking the easy way out with jokes. I had been so worried that Flint was going to have some kind of HAL9000 moment when he confronted his food making machine – but they totally went another way.
I think my favourite moments included Samberg’s character in a chicken suit, everything involving Mr. T, and when I finally realised that the mayor was modelled after the mayor from Jaws – they even look alike. Those were the standouts, but there were so many more because the movie just churns them out.
The Verdict: I don’t often say this, but you would be doing yourself a disservice by not seeing this film. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was a great experience and a great indication that Sony is on the right track in their animation department.
===================
Box Office wise, Cloudy is currently #1, but it is on schedule to barely break $100 million. That's not great, but it could be worse.
Worldwide: $62,808,014
Enjoy!
