Update: Rai made a good point in the comments that this was a personal joke.
Here's Rai's take on it:
The theme from "Boogerman" is performed at the Emmys. Shy Ronnie was nominated for an Emmy. The theme from "Boogerman" is outlandish, and Bill Hader assumes that it's a pile of dog [doodoo]. Many Emmy voters probably made similar assumptions about Shy Ronnie. Randy Newman beats the theme from "Boogerman." Randy Newman beat the Lonely Island at the Emmys.
I don't think the Digital Short was supposed to be laugh out loud funny. I think it was supposed to be a critique of Emmy voters who voted for a "safe" and "typical" Randy Newman song, while ignoring Shy Ronnie because it looked stupid.
That's not bad, but I think you might have that wrong a little. I don't think Bill called it dog feces because the Emmy voters assumed it was dog feces when it was truly amazing. I think Andy and the dudes were calling it bad because they have no idea how it got nominated for an Emmy in the first place. So I think this was more their way of laughing at themselves than complaining against the Emmy voters.
What do you think? Was this an inside joke or was it a whiny way to complain?

A musical tribute to one of the year's most talked about films.
SNL Digital Short: Boogerman
Katy Perry
Fred Armisen ... villain
Paul Brittain ... guy
Bill Hader ... presenter
Taran Killam ... guy
Bobby Moynihan ... scientist
Jay Pharoah ... Jamaican
Amy Poehler ... girlfriend
Andy Samberg ... dancer
Jason Sudeikis ... general
Kenan Thompson ... guy
Kristen Wiig ... girl
Booo! What a waste of Katy Perry and Amy Poehler! This is the kind of idea that sounds amusing until you do it. =^)
Andy's promos were funnier than this. Just this title alone could have inspired a funnier skit.
What do you think?
Enjoy!

Yeah it was 99% unfunny. The 1% funny was the Randy Newman comment.
I thought it sucked, too. All summer and THIS is the best they could come up with? Dudes, I am disappoint.
And a waste of Katy Perry and Amy Poehler. =^)

i didnt laugh at all. they could have easily made a funny digi short with katy perry. disappointed :(
The only good arts were Katy Perry has an amazing voice, and Andy was in it. Wasn't funny though.
This digital short moved me to tears. Not because it was fantastic or because I was laughing so hard, but because it was AWFUL. Really, all summer and that was the best they could come up with? I expected more with Katy Perry and Amy Poehler. And Justin Timberlake was there... why not use him?
OMG you're so right!!! if they couldn't come up with a digital short for either Amy or Katy, why didn't they do one with JT?! The whole episode was great except the digital short.
I don't think you're giving the Lonely Island enough credit.

This was calculated. This wasn't some half-hearted effort or an effort that fell flat.
Wow, Raj. You're right on!
Great insight! I still think it fell flat, but yeah, this was very personal to them and sort of an inside joke. Thanks so much for catching that!
I don't feel so bad like thay're crapping out (gives me hope for the coming weeks). This was beautifully done, just not for the purpose we want... our entertainment.
This was more artistically done for their own entertainment.

Well, that's just sour grapes. Shy Ronnie didn't deserve an Emmy, it wasn't that good. Dick In A Box really did deserve the Emmy, and they got it.
So now the short is unfunny AND whiny!
For a digital short, this sucked. I really hope TLI can do better next week.
the part that made me laugh was the puppet boogers but other than that, i agree with TAE, it was a waste of katy perry.
i cant wait for next week though, bryan cranston an kanye will be ultimate!
uhm i might be way off but in the boogerman sketch there's a scene where you can see the "real" boogerman and he looks just like peter saarsgard. ... might have to watch it one more time but it looked like him. what do you think?
