EDitorial: Why all the new hires on SNL? And who might get the cut.

So Lorne just hired three new performers and a batch of new writers as Will Forte leaves SNL (voluntarily) and some writers leave as well.

And this helps prove my theory correct. Assuming Lorne isn't announcing any cuts this season, then Lorne is expecting an exodus (whether natural or prodded on). This makes sense, seeing how last season we had three featured players, and the other 8 performers (Kristen, Bill, Jason, Andy, Kenan, Fred, Seth, & Will) are now approaching at least 6 years (this is Seth's 10th season and Fred's 9th). So what that typically means is that Lorne has to be ready so that he doesn't repeat the 1979 travesty (that is where all his last performers gave in their final season, and the next season Lorne tried to scramble together the writers to be performers, the audience didn't care as much and Lorne got replaced; Lorne came back with a vengeance in 1985).

And what "ready" means is that he needs other performers out there that the audience likes, so that if his four big stars left in the same season, he still has a good show. Makes sense. He did the same thing in 2005 by bringing in Jason, Andy, Bill, and Kristen (all were huge hits). Of course that gave him 16 players!!! Wow, talk about fighting for air time!

The down-side of this strategy is that if he doesn't get an exodus, and the new guys rock and roll (like they did in 2005), then he has to do what he did in the 2006-2007 season... let some of his older players go (Sanz, Parnell, and Finesse Mitchell). And then that season Fey and Dratch also left. So between a 2-person exodus and letting three people go (I agree with all three cuts and I don't think Dratch added enough), he was left 11 cast members (and no featured players) in the 2006-2007 season.

(In fact, that's why there are reruns and specials during the SNL season... because the studio told Lorne that he has to cut more cast or cut episodes... so he's choosing to keep as many cast members as he can.)

So... here is my prediction about how it's going to go down...

This season, Abby, Bobby, Nasim, and these new players really prove themselves. I mean check out the Scrubs Interns episode with Taran Killam. He stole that show. If SNL didn't pick him up, someone would have handed him his own sitcom after something like that. The webisode was almost like an audition to SNL, what with the impressions, the touchy-feely shtick, and the dance off (not to mention the awkwardness on camera that he faked). Plus the dude has been on Scrubs, MadTV, and he used to be in the Groundlings (like Will Ferrell and others).

If the other two can pull off humor like that then we've got a new future for SNL. ...And a potential repeat of 2006 on SNL (where Lorne is going to hope for an exodus or else he has to cut a few off).

Last season, there were 12 players on SNL, and now they're adding an additional 3. Subtract Will Forte (who recently announced that he's choosing to leave), and we're left with 14 players.

Next year, the 2011-2012 season, if no one leaves, then Lorne might have to let someone go.

Kenan Thompson is entering his 8th season right now, Fred Armisen: his 9th, and Seth Meyers: his 10th. This is Jason Sudeikis' 7th, and 6th for Bill Hader, Andy Samberg, and Kristen Wiig.

So Kristen Wiig has a chance to break out in films with her Bridesmaids film (and she's been supporting in dozens of films, so she has what it takes), Jason Sudeikis has been a late bloomer, but he's been on 30 Rock 12 times now, Cleveland Show 19 times, a larger part in Bounty Hunter, and he's got a great lineup of films coming, including a starring role that could break him out. And I think while Lorne is in no hurry to lose Andy Samberg, The Lonely Island would merely have to say to Lorne, "We want you to produce our show," and then BAM - Andy's gone and on his own show.

And then Fred Armisen might leave SNL simply because he knows that he should leave before he gets cut in order to save some face. (I could see Fred supporting on a sitcom, but he couldn't lead a film.)

Meanwhile Bill Hader is racking up the supporting roles, but he's failing to line up a potential break-out role (not sure why he didn't muster some momentum from his awesome Super Bad performance opposite Seth Rogen to pitch Seth a buddy comedy).

Kenan Thompson continues supporting roles (he's Greedy in Smurfs), but he's already had his chance to star in films twice, so he probably knows that supporting film roles and SNL are as good as it gets for him (unless he can land a supporting role on a sitcom).

I see Seth Meyers sticking it out on SNL until he's given a high-profile talk show gig. With the NBC debaucle, Lorne probably couldn't get him one, so Seth would probably need to land it on his own and not on NBC. Lorne has no reason to cut him since he's popular and only on Weekend Update.

So these are the people who might leave because they're pursuing TV, film, or saving face, in order of how likely I think they are to leave after the 2010-2011 season...

1. Kristen Wiig (to a sitcom or films)
2. Jason Sudeikis (to a sitcom or films)
3. Andy Samberg (to his own skit show with TLI or doing music full-time)
4. Fred Armisen (to save face and pursue smaller projects, like Will Forte just did)

And then here are the cuts that I see likely if Lorne is forced to let someone go (listed in order; note that I love these people and think they're hilarious, so don't get me wrong; it's more about the business of it):

1. Fred Armisen (his Obama impression is his insurance, but it won't last forever)
2. Kenan Thompson (being the only black cast member is his insurance, but it won't last forever)
3. Jenny Slate (if she makes it to this coming season, she will probably be the female cast member with the most to prove, especially because Vanessa Bayer looks spunky, fresh, and super creative)

I don't think Lorne will let these people go that I'm listing below (in order of how valuable they are to him):

1. Kristen Wiig (come on; she's the Eddie Murphy of the female cast)
2. Andy Samberg (the dude put YouTube on the map, his fan base is through the roof, his record(s) sell, and he seems to get nominated for an Emmy (or Grammy) every year; if Lorne was thinking of letting him go, he'd just drop Andy down to the Digital Shorts only before he'd ever let Andy go)
3. Bobby Moynihan, Abby Elliott, and Nasim Pedrad (Lorne needs fresh blood and a future to SNL, and these are them)
4. Jason Sudeikis (Jason is a do-all straight man and very charming; with Will Forte out of the picture, Jason needs to be there to fill that role)
5. Bill Hader (Bill has some great impressions, a huge fan base, and he's also a do-all actor; plus he hasn't been around as long as Fred and Kenan)
6. Seth Meyers (he's been around forever, but he's only on Weekend Update and he's still super popular; the only reason to let him go is if a producer wanted to move on because they didn't like him as the head writer or something)

So again, it falls on Fred Armisen, Kenan Thompson, and Jenny Slate as the most likely candidates to get cut (if the need arose).

What do you think?

SNL News: 3 New Performers

It seems that those writers SNL hired were performers who might not have made the cut to perform on SNL (maybe they auditioned or Lorne just liked their material). However, SNL still offered them jobs as writers, and, because they have common sense, they took the gigs. That said, in the rounds that Lorne and Kristen Wiig have been making (and probably others), SNL did select three new performers to replace Will Forte. More of my opinions after the news story...

Three comedians — Paul Brittain, Vanessa Bayer, and Taran Killam — are rumored to join the cast of Saturday Night Live for its 36th season.

According to The Comic’s Comic, Brittain is a Chicago-based improviser and sketch comedian, Bayer is a Cleveland native who also performs throughout Chicago, and Killam has been on-air with MADtv and Nick Cannon’s Wild ‘N Out.

FYI: Yesterday, it was announced that Will Forte decided to call it quits after eight seasons on SNL.

Here are video clips of Bayer and Killam…

Vanessa Bayer: Blue Shield of California Commercial

Taran Killam: Scrubs Interns - Webisode 5

Thanks to Rishabh for the scoop! You can check out Rishabh's Adventures of Billy the Worm blog here:

So Killam is more of a progressive step, since he's already been doing his comedy on TV for awhile (similar to how Amy Poehler and Kenan Thompson both were doing comedy on other shows before SNL). (I'm actually surprised Killam would take this gig, because he would probably be offered his own sitcom otherwise.) And Bayer and Brittain are more of the "finds." So we'll continue to check these three out and let you know what we think.

Brittain and Bayer were both confirmed through their improv organization, the Improv Olympics. Taran has not yet been confirmed through a direct source (SNL, The Groundlings, or Killam).

If you find more videos of these three in action, send them our way!

What do you think about these three?

Thanks, and...

SNL News - the writers change

Second City performer Tom Flanigan has been hired as a writer by SNL. Flanigan joins fellow Second City performer Shelly Gossman who was also hired to the writing team.

Hannibal Burress leaves SNL to write for 30 Rock. After a successful album release, Hannibal is going to go try his writing pen on a sitcom. Chelsea Peretti leaves SNL to join the writing staff of Parks & Recreation.

Could it be that SNL won't add any fresh faces, and that their recruiting was only for writers? Could it also be that Lorne wants to test out a few performers as writers first?

SNL News - Will Forte leaves SNL

MacGruber has survived his last explosion.

Will Forte is keeping up the "Saturday Night Live" tradition of late-August departures by not coming back to the series for Season 36.

The New York Times reports that multiple sources say Forte won't be coming back and that the parting was amicable -- though at Forte's request. He wants to devote more time to other projects.

Hopefully those other projects will bring him more success than "MacGruber," the hilarious but certifiable bomb adaptation of one of his many "SNL" characters.

And there've been so many... the Falconer, Clancy T Bachleratt, absent-minded ESPN Classic commentator Greg Stink and, most recently, the monotone lothario Hamilton, whose inappropriate speeches at weddings, funerals and Q&As made for some of last season's funnier sketches.

UPDATE: NBC referred Zap2it to Forte's personal publicist who confirmed the news, saying, "After eight great seasons, Will has made the decision to move on from SNL to pursue new opportunities. He is eternally grateful to Lorne and all of the incredible people he worked with over the years."

So what do you think -- a good or bad move for Forte? And, most importantly, how much will you miss him?

From:
http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2010/08/saturday-night-live-will-forte-not-returning-next-season.html
==============

Thanks to TheKinkySurgeon for the scoop!

Okay, so I'm actually more surprised that this came at Will's request. Lorne will need to clean house soon (the average stay is approaching 8 years instead of 4-6), but he does need to line up new performers.

So Lorne is probably happy about this, because he has one less tough decision about who to ask to leave.

My personal opinion is that Will won't be terribly missed. He is a great straight man, MacGuber is amazingly and consistently funny on SNL, and his songs are hilarious (and I love his dancing coach), but his humor is usually too weird. He's bombed in two movies now that he's starred in.

So is this a good move for Will? Hard to say. He was great and valuable on SNL, but it's better to leave voluntarily for your career than to get kicked off. He picked a great time to go. So really it's just a question of what he has in mind and if it will succeed. If it's another movie... probably not.

We told you so! Oh, and I have to leave you a "We told you so!" I wasn't sure that it would come from Will Forte (versus from Lorne and SNL), but over here we predicted that Will would depart soon...

Space Chimps 2 coming direct to DVD

"Space Chimps 2: Zartog Strikes Back" is coming the 5th of October, 2010 (DVD premiere).

This is interesting, because the first one didn't perform in the US as well as they hoped, and so the sequel has been released in theaters in other countries, but in the US it's going straight to DVD.

Here are the international releases...

UK - 28 May 2010
Israel - 22 July 2010
Kazakhstan - 5 August 2010 (3-D version)
Russia - 5 August 2010 (3-D version)
USA - 5 October 2010 (DVD premiere)
Netherlands - 16 December 2010

Wikipedia still thinks Andy Samberg is going to be in the DVD release, but it doesn't have the news that Space Chimps 2 is coming to DVD for the US.

The director of Space Chimps 2 is John H. Williams. This is his directorial debut (sad that he's debuting on DVD in the US). He produced all four Shrek movies. Using that momentum, he started Vanguard Animation (not a huge leap, considering he was already running Vanguard Films), so that means he also produced Valiant, Happily Never After (but he let the DVD sequel go to the studio execs, which is why it has no name actors and why it's so horrible), Space Chimps, and now Space Chimps 2. Their next project is Emo Boy, based on a comic book. More on Emo Boy: http://comics.wikia.com/wiki/Emo_Boy

Was Andy Samberg onto Mark Wahlberg?

It was fun when we were all discovering Wahlberg's latent sense of humor, watching him pop up as a supporting character in Huckabees or The Departed with crack comic timing, or even parody himself on SNL as a good-humored response to Andy Samberg's brilliant Mark Wahlberg Talks To Animals. But Samberg was onto something in that skit that we all chose to ignore.

We laugh with Wahlberg when he's playing off his trademark intensity, but we laugh at him when he doesn't realize he's still being way too intense to be funny. The way he talks to the chicken? That's how he talks to everyone in the scene with him in all of his comedies, and it's been funny this whole time because we never put up with it for longer than a minute-long bit in a scene.

Read the full review of The Other Guys:
http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Rant-Mark-Wahlberg-Is-Not-That-Funny-And-We-Need-To-Stop-Telling-Him-He-Is-20013.html

Basically, the author's point is that Mark is too hard to endure when you get a full movie of his intensity and speech patterns in a comedy. And essentially Andy Samberg was onto that when highlighting Mark's intensity in the SNL spoof.

Jimmy Fallon should host SNL

Jimmy Fallon would be a great host! Plus Andy does like the only great Jimmy Fallon impression, so it would be hilarious if they did like Celebrity Jeopardy or something and played each other!

Plus Jimmy and Andy are great friends and have amazing chemistry together (as well as Jimmy and Kristen), so you'd know Andy would be an active participant in that episode.

Jimmy was on SNL from 98 to 2004. He never hosted SNL, but he cameo'd on 4/9/05, 2/4/06, 12/16/06, and 5/9/09. (The last two were when Timberlake hosted, so they could do the Barry Gibbs Talk Show together.)

Plus it was Jimmy who got Andy to perform I'm on a Boat live (for the first time), and to bring back Lazy Sunday with Chris Parnell (and to make it look like it wasn't rehearsed until they got going)...

Fred Armisen and Abby Elliott are dating!

As a disclaimer, this looks a little like celebrity gossip, so it might not be 100% true, but there are quotes and stuff, so it probably is true.

Fred Armisen has been linked with 'Saturday Night Live' costar Abby Elliott, with Life & Style reporting he's officially dating the actress, who is two decades his junior. This news comes just days after Armisen's split from 'Mad Men' star Elisabeth Moss was revealed; the married couple separated in May after 10 months of marriage in what was termed an amicable separation.
Armisen, 43, joined 'SNL' in 2002; Elliott, 23, came onboard in 2008. Of the new couple, a source tells Life & Style: "After the split, Fred sought comfort in Abby. They just started dating a few months ago. Fred and Abby are getting to know each other in a romantic way and taking things slowly. But they're enjoying each other's company."

Read more here:
http://www.popeater.com/2010/08/19/fred-armisen-new-girlfriend-abby-elliott-divorce-elisabeth-moss/

Thanks to Kylie for the scoop!

So what's interesting is that Andy went to their wedding (Fred and Elisabeth). Also, they were only married for 10 months. That's sad, because the first year of marriage is the one to beat since it's the year of crazy "wait what did I do" thoughts, arguments, and a rude awakening from the twitterpation of dating. It's where you fall out of love and into lifelong companionship and true love. It's hard for everyone.

Now the other interesting thing is that I'd never expect Fred Armisen to be the one playing the field and moving on to relationships with attractive younger starlets like this. Abby's quite the catch.

So congrats to Fred and Abby, but it's sad that it's coming after the demise of Fred's marriage. It should be cool for Andy though, because he's probably a little more likely to hang out with them both now (with their powers combined, Abby and Fred are probably a ton of fun as a couple).

What do you think?

Conan O'Brien has been working on television since before The Simpsons! He was hired to write for SNL in 1987 and he hosted the show in 2001. Let him host again!! Yes, there is tension between Conan and NBC right now, but this would be great!!!

Thanks to Anony for the scoop!

Enjoy!

According to Movie Line, GLEE star and Emmy nominated actor Jane Lynch will be hosting the October 9 edition of "Saturday Night Live" (premiere of the show's 36th season).

Lynch has sketch comedy experience and has appeared at Second City in the past.

Lynch was recently nominated for the Emmy Award for Supporting Actress in a Comedy. The trophy will be awarded on August 29. Lynch will return to play Sue Sylvester when GLEE begins its second season on September 21.

In the U.S., over 4.5 million songs have been downloaded, and both albums have been certified Gold for sales in excess of 500,000 units.
