In 2007, fast-rising "Saturday Night Live" star Andy Samberg was scheduled to present a Golden Popcorn at the MTV Movie Awards and do a brief routine with Kevin James. But because the show was squeezed for time, Samberg was cut out of the picture.
Now, Andy Samberg is hosting the entire Movie Awards this Sunday night at 9 p.m. ET. And you can bet that he'll be getting plenty of screen time.
"Sweet, sweet revenge," laughed the mother-loving funnyman. "I feel like, in general, if somebody has a bit cut out of the show, they should be allowed to host after that."
Despite his past disappointments, however, Samberg told us that he isn't harboring any ill will toward the show's producers. Well, OK, maybe a little.
"I work with them closely every day, but in the back of my mind I hate them," Samberg joked. "I'm very petty. I think that's going to take me far in this business."
The viral-video superstar has already gone far, and with the unpredictable nature of MTV's annual tribute to Hollywood at his command, not even Samberg knows where he'll be taking Sunday's live show.
"I feel really excited to host," he explained. "I've never really hosted anything before, so I was thinking the best way to do it would be to get in front of millions of people live on national television. That's generally the way I go with stuff.
"I think people can expect a lot of celebs," Samberg said of Sunday's lineup. "There'll be a lot of stuff about movies, and it's live, so there's definitely going to be a lot of people wandering around the stage aimlessly — looking for their marks, reading the prompter poorly, missing punch lines."
But as we've seen in past years, those unscripted moments are what always seem to make for the best MTV awards shows. "I think MTV's just mainly hoping that something goes horribly, horribly wrong," Samberg grinned. "Because that's generally what they bank on. So, yeah, it's going to be the best Movie Awards ever."
And if Samberg needs to inform some young comedian that their skit has been cut out due to time restrictions, he said he won't feel too bad about it. "Maybe someone will get a bit cut this year, and then they can host next year," Samberg said. "It seems only right."
