
The golden age of novelty rock continues
As record companies struggle to shift units and scenes splinter into ever more obscure sub-genres, there’s one area of music that has never been stronger. We are in the golden age of novelty rock.
The evidence is everywhere. Flight of the Conchords are arguably the hottest band on the planet. Tenacious D have the clout to headline huge rock festivals. Andy Samberg’s music group, the Lonely Island, have become the saving grace of Saturday Night Live. Even the godfathers of the genre, Spinal Tap, re-formed for the summer.
These artists’ success is founded on jokes built into great-sounding songs. That insistence on taking the music seriously is echoed throughout the new generation of novelty acts, the best of whom are musicians first, comedians second.
