Chris Kattan stars in perhaps the summer's most engaging new TV show.
Seriously.
Not that Kattan isn't funny, but you generally don't associate him with something this, you know, smart. Such is the shadow of his buttocks-smacking "Saturday Night Live" character Mango.
In the whimsical "Bollywood Hero," Kattan plays a version of himself - a washed-up comedian who longs to be a leading man. He gets his chance when he's cast in "Peculiar Dancing Boy," a lavish Bollywood musical being shot in India.
Even though Kattan plays "Chris Kattan," a comedian who starred on "SNL" and in such films as "Corky Romano," don't confuse the series with his real life, the actor says.
"The whole joke is how I'm not getting hero roles," he says. "It is tough in this business, but I'm doing as well as most. I've got nothing to complain about. I know I'm not Harrison Ford."
He compares "Bollywood Hero" to the HBO series "Curb Your Enthusiasm." It is not a stretch; both shows share a dry, sharp wit and heroes who sport the same name as the star.
"It's like Larry David," Kattan says. "He's not talking about his divorce (on his show). I'm not talking about my life. There are things in the show that actually happen to me because that's reality. But you have to remember it's television and you're playing someone."
Kattan's show neatly blends realism with fantasy. The program was filmed for 10 weeks in Mumbai, and the location work is stunning. You also get a musical score by Michael Penn and over-the-top dance sequences choreographed by Longinus Fernandes ("Slumdog Millionaire").
Making the division between reality and TV fuzzier is the fact that the likes of Keanu Reeves, Maya Rudolph, Andy Samberg and David Alan Grier pop up as themselves.
"People respond to scripts and funny ideas," Kattan says. "Also if you're a friend. Maya is a friend. Andy is a friend. People do it out of that. If the script is good and the idea is fresh and funny, those are reasons to do it."
You even get Kip Kattan, Chris' real-life father, showing up as small-screen Chris' meddlesome pop.
"That does make the show a little bit more realistic," Kattan says. "He always does find a way to finagle himself into my life."

I was actually hoping to see Chris Kattan pretending to be a hit star in India. Oh well. Can't win them all.
Can't wait to see Andy on this show!
Enjoy!
