I’m in a restaurant in LA trying to interview the harpist when the director [Quentin Tarantino] sits down at the next table, and he’s louder than us, telling his friends about the time he fictionalised Hitler. “So I woke up one day and wrote on this piece of paper, just kill him,” he barks. “Just f***ing kill him.” “Da#n,” mutters Newsom, grinning conspiratorially at me. “He stole my line.”
It seems that Joanna has stopped using the singing voice that many find annoying. I've heard her sing in a regular voice, so I know she's got that talent. Observe:
...
Her new album, which we are here to discuss, contains no bloodbath, precious few totalitarians and scarcely a trace of her old singing voice. That voice put off some listeners who found it “ragged, rough, shrill, babyish — whatever the word was — and I’ve heard plenty of words,” she groans, eyes rolling.
...
Newsom will surely be recognised as one of the foremost composers of her generation. Her startling live performances have always been critically acclaimed, and this month a scholarly book about her body of work called Visions of Joanna Newsom (she gave it her blessing but did not collaborate) will be published. Essayists study her musicality, her storytelling, her rise through the blogosphere.
...
And yet Newsom is only 28, a homebody who still lives near the upstate Californian goldrush town where she grew up and who sees her parents at least once a week.
...
As a child there was no TV, no radio, no pop music. Her parents were doctors and musicians and “kind of idealists when it came to hoping they could protect us from bad influences, like violent movies, or stupid stuff”.
...
They were all taught piano but she asked for a harp at the age of 5, and got it a few years later. By her teens the pair were inseparable — friends would come to the house and she’d be there with her harp, writing songs.
...
Indeed, sitting here by the pool in Hollywood, where she orders Sazerac cocktails (rye and absinthe; she has to explain them to the waiter), she is happy to chat about fashion (ChloĆ©’s spring collection) and the modelling she did for Armani. She is getting over her shyness about having her picture taken, filling the new album sleeve with photos of herself.
...
After a boyfriend, the musician Noah Georgeson, she was in a long relationship with another musician, Bill Callahan. The pair were the Posh and Becks of the altfolk world. Now she is dating the Saturday Night Live comedian Andy Samberg, famous for his “di##-in-a-box” jokes.
...
She doesn’t want to discuss her private life but she goes gooey over a baby in the restaurant to the point that I think I see a tear form in her eye, and she does say she may end up moving to New York.
...
Have One on Me is released on March 1 by Drag City records. Joanna Newsom plays the Royal Festival Hall, SE1, on May 11 and 12 (0844 847 9910, southbankcentre.co.uk).
...
Joanna said, "My brother had an MC Hammer album that was riddled with silent patches because my mom had erased the dirty bits from the cassette. I really don’t know how she did it — that might be a lost art — but she had it mastered."
Check out the loooong interview here (I just included some excerpts):

Thanks for posting a nice and unbiased review of Joanna! Just to add, the book has all ready been released and her album drops in the states tomorrow- Feb. 23. I hope she does move to NYC with Andy and they're both happy. :)
Couldn't agree more, anony. I think it's sweet that they like each other so much and hope it works out for the best. :)
Hey TAE, haven'y been on in while, dues to school T-T, theres a lot I need to comment on and at the same time a lot of homework to do, but I promise to post my exicting comments soon to add. Anyway I want to let you know about this: http://tv.yahoo.com/blog/betty-white-edges-closer-to-saturday-night-live--1006
joanna newsom can suck it
On a totally unrelated note, I noticed that Justin Beiber is scheduled to host SNL on April 10th. I'm not a fan of his music, but he might end up wowing us with his acting skills.
Hey TAE, I have some more news for you!:
''Teen seasation'' Justin Bieber is going to appear on a episode of SNL and is singing two of his songs off his new album 'My World 2.0'. His appearance has been booked due to his fans launching a campaign on Twitter to get him on the show (much like Betty White). Justin will appear on the April 10th and hopes to work with Andy with a Digital Short hopefully a musical one for sure.
Anyways, I am happy for him and a fan of his (although he isn't the best, he pretty good and a cute guy). Can't wait for the short which I hope he does, I am already guessing what it will be? Maybe a parody of him and Andy as two rising teen stars in rivarly and singing a duet about how much they hate each other or something like that and they both break out and dance. The possiblities are endless and I just can't wait.
P.S.: They haven't mention who is going to be the host, Justin is wishing for Chuck Norris..

=D
Shoot its looks like Anony beat me while I was wirting this long-ass description of the story! Curse you Anony! (Sarcasm..)
=D
who is justin bieber?
Last anony: a new and young but successful musician.
Thanks Tisha and Anonys for the scoops on Betty and Justin!

I wouldn't quite go as far as calling Justin B. a musician. He's a young singer....as in child before even reaching teenibopper age in the same grinded out machine of pop junk.
Anony,
Hahahaha. Yeah, you might be right. However, he has also broken a few records for sales on a first album. So he's shooting up like a rocket.
- TAE
That might be quite literal. ^^
*snicker snicker*
