The last two weeks of late night shows have been so great that it's easy to forget that, most of the time, those shows aren't all that amazing. For all the great things that David Letterman, Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien or anybody else have done, their shows are typically cycles through a handful of familiar tropes: The news-based monologue, the wacky interaction with the band leader, the piece of audience participation, the wacky off-set video package, two celebrity interviews and a musical performance. It's a predictable formula that has worked for years, but it's also just that: A formula. While "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report" have shaken things up a bit, the late night scene is still flooded with stuff we've seen before.

It's also full of people we've seen before. Leno and Letterman have literally been on the air for decades — isn't it about time some new blood got injected into the after-hours game? (And we're not talking about Chelsea Handler.) Here are a few people who should really be given the opportunity to shine.

The guy already has experience hosting the MTV Movie Awards and has been the MVP of "Saturday Night Live" for the past few years. He's everything that's great about Fallon (the easy-going personality, the "Everyone's invited!" brand of humor, the willingness to look weird) without as much stammering.

Sarah Palin and Glen Beck offer to co-host SNL

Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin may have just made NBC an offer they can't refuse, after watching videos of Saturday Night Live sketches making fun of each of them.

"Sarah and I would like to make an offer to NBC," said Beck. "Would you like to make the offer?

"I think we should co-host." said Palin. "How could they say no?"

The two then made a personal wager between each other -- Beck saying that NBC won't accept, Palin saying that they will -- with the stake of the bet being a steak. Palin added: "I can envision episode after episode of things that I could mock myself."

When Sarah was on, Andy Samberg did the Palin rap with Amy Poehler (he was an eskimo). So it would be interesting to see what he would do with her hosting.

You can always tell how long Andy, Bill Hader, and TLI have been on SNL by how many Laser Cats they are up to... this is their fifth season.

Pretty funny, and it keeps the series fresh in this barage of film references. My favorite one was Andy's Avatar chamber gag.

Hot Rod - a hilarious movie that received terrible reviews

Hot Rod made #7 on this list, beating out Freddie Got Fingered, The Brothers Solomon, and Night at the Roxbury. I love that Billy Madison, Waiting, and Dirty Work also made this list.



Hot Rod features a lot of random, non-sequitor style humor, and the cast features some of the funniest guys working today. Danny McBride is batting 1.000 for his comedy career; the guy has yet to be unfunny in anything.

Rating: 38%

Earlier I wrongly predicted that Hader's Greg the alien skit would be done on the Charles Barkley episode (it made sense because Charles is a sports commentator). However, I'm predicting it again for this coming episode, since the alien character would be classic when set against Sigourney Weaver.

Anony2 had a great idea that Sigourney and Andy could do an Aliens spoof with Glirk! =^)

Barkley can't keep a straight face near the beginning. That's his second crack of the night (at least).

Bill Hader loses it on the wet willie. Bobby loses it when Kenan's behind him. It looks like Andy is trying to keep his face off the camera then too, because he seems to be smiling.

These skits are funny despite Kenan and the sexual jokes. It's funny just to look at their reactions.

He nailed it. Truly one of his greatest impressions.

The only other SNL player to do an impression of Nicholas Cage is Jimmy Fallon in a Jeopardy skit, on 03.20.1999.

SNL 1/9/10 - Caitlin's review

"Saturday Night Live" welcomed the new decade with a duo of seasoned "SNL" vets, featuring basketball star Charles Barkley and R&B diva Alicia Keys in the show's first episode of 2010.

Barkley, who last hosted the show in 1993 alongside musical guest Nirvana...

Barkley took a turn poking fun at himself, starring in a skit about getting professional help to fix his golf swing and joking about getting "arrested," a nod to his Jan. 2009 drunk-driving bust...

Barkley also joined "SNL" vets in several show mainstays, playing second banana to Kenan Thompson's trash-talking prison interrogator in "Scared Straight" as he wore a Don King-style gray wig and polyester uniform and joining Kristen Wiig in the "Shanna at the Ski Lodge" sketch...

Keys, who hosted in 2001 with actress Reese Witherspoon, also took her turn on the "SNL" comedy circuit, joining Andy Samberg in the "Booty Call" digital short that saw Keys seduce the flamboyant, socially awkward Samberg over the phone...

Next Saturday's episode will feature "Avatar" star and "SNL" hosting alum Sigourney Weaver and first-time musical guest the Ting Tings.

ZOË RICE: Andy Samberg and the animals. It’s all fine and cute. I can’t imagine anyone going gaga over this sketch, but it’s a better end to the evening than the previous one, that’s for sure.

HOWARD MEGDAL: Enjoyable enough. This one might be played out, though.

STEVE MURPHY: Cute as usual. Not laugh out loud funny, but a nice, short little dessert to a pretty funny Christmas show!

Charles Barkley SNL Promo (with Jason Sudeikis)

So what will it be like with a former sports star and current sports caster (commentator) hosting SNL?

Jason's bit at the end is hilarious! That's far more useful! The other two weren't amazing, but they were still cute and funny. Great job Jason!

What will Andy Samberg and the SNL cast do with Charles Barkley (and don't forget that Sigourney Weaver is next week, and John Hamm is rumored)?

Well, this week, like this promo, we should expect a LOT of basketball jokes and scenarios. I also expect Charles to appear as sports guest on on Bill Hader's "Greg is not an alien" show (called "Game Time with Randy and Greg), seing how that's also a sports show (it was last shown on 10/17/09 with Gerard Butler, so that's enough of a time lapse for a repeat).



Side note: The "Game Time" show was originally debuted on the 3/7/09 episode with The Rock. The show was called, "Game Time with Dave and Greg," where The Rock was Dave Delmonte, and Kenan played another commentator, Randy Dukes. Since they wanted to repeat the skit, they changed it to make the show focus on the SNL players, so Kenan became the co-anchor to Greg, and his character was promoted. In the second version (on 10/17/09), the show was called "Game Time with Randy and Greg" instead. So if they did the skit a third time this week, then Charles Barkley might play himself as a guest commentator on the show.

Did Andy Samberg hit it right with The Tizzle Wizzle show?

ZOË RICE: Is the short sending up Yo Gabba Gabba here? I’ve never seen it, but I would imagine it’s something like this, and perhaps I would be struck more if I got the reference. I smiled by the time we got to knives and pills, and James Franco hit the right chord at the end. I’m not gushing about this short, but it’s okay.

HOWARD MEGDAL: It was also short enough to revel in the absurdity.

STEVE MURPHY: If every sketch was this funny, SNL would be the best show on TV. Way out there, surreal, fast, a single great idea done smoothly and well. Andy Samberg just gets it completely right sometimes.

What's your favorite Andy Samberg face?

Making the ugliest face you physically can for the amusement of others is a great move. We do it a lot when we’re little kids, but most of us tend to grow out of it eventually. It’s a shame, because even though making an ugly face is about as simple a “joke” someone can make, making ugly faces is a talent that should be celebrated regardless of age.

I’ve mentioned before that one of my favorite things about Andy Samberg is that he’s really, really good at making awesome and/or ugly faces. I don’t think Samberg’s a bad-looking guy by any means, but his exaggerated features enable him to twist his face in ways that would draw envy from even the most talented facial contortionists. When I think of guys who are great at making faces - which is somewhat of a lost “art” these days - I think of Jim Carrey, Bill Hader, and Andy Samberg. In terms of faces, Samberg probably cracks me up the most.

Next two hosts of SNL: Charles Barkley & Sigourney Weaver

"SNL" is back on Jan. 9 with former NBA star Charles Barkley as the host. The "round mound of rebound" is known now for his great sense of humor in commercials and on the golf course.

This won't be his first time hosting, either -- Barkley hosted the 1993 season premiere of "SNL" with musical guest Nirvana. Joining Barkley for his second go-round is musical guest Alicia Keys, hopefully performing new songs from her album "The Element of Freedom," which dropped on Dec. 15.

For the Jan. 16 show, "Avatar" star Sigourney Weaver joins studio 8H, along with musical guest The Ting Tings, who are nominated for a Best New Artist Grammy.

We have two requests -- "SNL" star Kenan Thompson does a mean Charles Barkley impression so we'd like to see that, please. And if there isn't a Sigourney Weaver "Ghostbusters" sketch, we are going to be extremely upset. We don't care if they already covered it when she hosted in 1986 -- we'd like to see it again.

Charles Barkley was a basketball player in the NBA (84-2000) on the 76ers, Suns, and Rockets. He was part of the US Olympic Dream Team in 92, and he led the US to Olympic gold again in 96. Now what Barkley is known for is being a studio analyst for TNT's NBA coverage. He also hosts the TNT show, Inside the NBA.

What do you think? Charles and Kenan would be funny. I know TLI could write a fun Ghostbusters skit for Sigourney. Of course, there's going to be an Avatar skit as well. What could Andy do with them?

Incredibad - Sidedown's #6 Album of 2009

#6 Album of 2009: The Lonely Island

What can I saw about Incredibad other than that I wish it was twice as long? The quality of parody/comedy music has never been this high.



As you likely know by now, The Lonely Island is Akiva Schaffer, SNL's Andy Samberg, and Jorma Taccone. Much of their music was written for the SNL Digital Shorts, which have easily been the best thing about Saturday Night Live over the last few years. Incredibad is not only hilarious but musically accessible, with high production values and a slew of ridiculous guests like Justin Timberlake, T-Pain, Natalie Portman, Jack Black, and more. Hearing Norah Jones sing about Chex Mix™ and mistaking a woman for a bag of trash is priceless.



The "classics" are on this album, including "Natalie's Rap" and "Lazy Sunday" (The Chronicle of Narnia)...

The album comes with a bonus DVD of some of the SNL shorts...

Hands down, this is the funniest album of the year, and I hope to hear more from The Lonely Island in the future.
