Andy Samberg, who just hosted the 2009 MTV Movie Awards and is perhaps best known for his appearances on Saturday Night Live, will lend his voice to the animated film, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs from the book of the same name. Samberg will play the character of Brent.
If you went to see the Pixar film, Up, this weekend, it's likely you saw a preview for the film. The book from which it is adapted is a children's picture book written by Judi Barrett and illustrated by Ron Barrett. According to the film's webpage on IMDb, the animated movie is scheduled to arrive in theaters on September 18, 2009.
First published in 1982, Cloudy has been a favorite among children for decades. It tells the story of the land of Chewandswallow, where food falls from the sky. Snow falls in the form of mashed potatoes. Rain falls as juice and soup, and storms may just arrive as hamburgers.
How filmmakers plan to adapt the story of this picture book of 32 pages to an animated feature film remains to be seen.
Other cast members include the voices of Anna Faris as Sam; Bill Hader as Flint Lockwood; Mr. T as Earl Devereaux; and Tracy Morgan as Cal. Additional voices in the film include James Caan and Bruce Campbell.
Parents and families who have shared this book together will either find seeing the movie a pleasure or another example of how picture books do not always translate well to the big screen. Audiences will be able to judge for themselves this fall.
